Abstract :
[en] This paper aims to illustrate some current research questions about the personification of the Jordan river in early Christian Art, especially in the scene of the Ascension of Elijah, by analyzing two sarcophagi from the late 4 th century AD. The Arles sarcophagus allows a reflection on the relationship with Graeco-Roman iconographical traditions whereas the Milano sarcophagus raises the question of its perception by its contemporaries.
