Abstract :
This study focuses on the presence of PTSD symptoms 80 years after the Battle of Normandy, by analysing the accounts of five civilian survivors. The results show that symptoms or stigmata of PTSD influence the daily lives of people who experienced these events. Two symptom trajectories emerge: some people display stigmata consistently since the events, while others see their symptoms emerge or re-emerge as they age. Contextual factors specific to the Battle of Normandy and more universal mechanisms have been identified and may have contributed to the longevity of these symptoms. These factors include changes in collective representations, the social silence surrounding the events, and persistent ruminations resulting from difficulties in making sense of certain traumatic aspects of the experience. These results highlight the lasting impact of traumatic events experienced in childhood on the memory of the elderly, and show that memories of major negative events can persist or resurface after several decades, with significant clinical consequences.
