Abstract :
[fr] Victor Hugo a écrit : « La presse, c’est la parole à l’état de foudre ; c’est l’électricité sociale. Il faut que la foudre soit libre, c’est-à-dire qu’il faut que la presse soit libre. » Pourtant, la presse semble de plus en plus prise en tenaille entre une population complotiste qui la pense bras armé du système, d’une part, et des autorités qui lui reprochent son indépendance et son esprit critique. La mise au pas de la presse indépendante semble s’être accélérée dans certains pays au cours des cinq à dix dernières années. Quel bilan peut-on dresser de l’état du quatrième pouvoir ?

Yet, the press today finds itself increasingly caught between two opposing forces: on one side, a conspiratorial segment of the population that perceives it as a tool of the establishment, and on the other, authorities that criticize its independence and critical stance. In several countries, the crackdown on independent journalism appears to have accelerated over the past five to ten years. What is the current state of the fourth estate?
