Symmachus; Ausonius; reception of Fronto; epistolary practice
Abstract :
[en] This paper analyses the reception of Fronto’s epistolary
corpus in Late Antiquity, and in particular in
Ausonius’ and Symmachus’ works. In the last decades
of the 4th century AD, Marcus Aurelius is represented
as the utmost example of imperial virtue. In this
context, the reception of Fronto, his beloved teacher,
is not limited to the use of archaic terms occurring in
his collection, but affects Ausonius’ and Symmachus’
idea of epistolary practice as well as their strategy of
self-representation.
