Abstract :
[en] This paper presents a special beam finite element accounting for a possible deformation of the cross section of the member. The element is based on the superposition of a classical beam displacement field and of a local field describing local effects, with an approximation on the local second order membrane stress field. The methodology is presented as an efficient alternative solution to shell FE models. It is applied to the analysis of profiles with rectangular hollow section susceptible to both global and local buckling. Different kinds of analyses are presented (computation of critical bifurcation loads, geometrically non linear analysis, geometrically and materially non linear analysis)
