Abstract :
[en] In the summer of 1419, the Venetian consul in Alexandria, Biagio Dolfin, sent the merchant Angelo Michiel to Cairo with the task of gathering useful information on the supply of spices from the Red Sea, especially pepper, for the coming trading season. Michiel, in order to carry out his task, had to interface with high officials of the Mamluk Sultanate, Dragomanni and other Latin merchants, and promptly report back to the consul on what he learned. The study will be based primarily on the surviving letters of correspondence between Michiel and the consul preserved in the Venetian State Archives and also on a further dispatch that recently appeared in the catalogue of a book and manuscript antiquities shop in Vienna, most likely from the same Venetian collection. If reporting on the arrival of spices was Michiel's official task, he did not, however, neglect his profession as a merchant and attempted to conduct business in the Mamluk capital as well. This paper will focus on illustrating the construction of communication channels within the Cairo Sultanate between Venetian agents, who juggled official duties and the possibility of personal profit, and Mamluk officials. Particular attention will be paid to the methods and practices by which agents built up their networks of contacts and whether or not the practice of mercantile trading facilitated access to information. In addition, the paper will examine how agents reported the news they learned to those who sent them on a mission to Cairo, the consul and the community of Venetians in Alexandria, in order to provide information crucial to the success of Venice's trade with the Levant.
[it] Nell’estate 1419 il console veneziano di Alessandria, Biagio Dolfin, inviò al Cairo il mercante Angelo Michiel con l’incarico di raccogliere informazioni utili sull’approvvigionamento di spezie dal Mar Rosso, in particolare il pepe, per la prossima stagione commerciale. Michiel, per poter svolgere il suo compito, doveva interfacciarsi con alti funzionari del Sultanato mamelucco, dragomanni e altri mercanti latini, e riferire prontamente al console su quanto veniva a conoscenza. Lo studio si baserà principalmente sulle lettere superstiti della corrispondenza tra Michiel e il console conservate all’Archivio di Stato di Venezia e anche su un ulteriore dispaccio, recentemente apparso sul catalogo di un negozio di antichità librarie e manoscritte di Vienna, molto probabilmente proveniente dalla stessa collezione veneziana. Se riportare le informazioni sull’arrivo di spezie era l’incarico ufficiale di Michiel, questi comunque non tralasciò la sua professione di mercante e tentò di portare avanti affari anche nella capitale mamelucca. In questo intervento si punterà a illustrare la costruzione di canali di comunicazione all’interno del Sultanato del Cairo tra agenti veneziani, che si destreggiavano tra incarico ufficiale e la possibilità di profitto personale, e funzionari mamelucchi. Si presterà particolare attenzione ai metodi e alle pratiche con cui gli agenti costruivano le loro reti di contatti e se l’esercizio della mercatura facilitasse o meno l’accesso alle informazioni. Inoltre, si esaminerà come gli agenti riferivano le notizie di cui venivano a conoscenza a chi aveva li aveva mandati in missione al Cairo, il console e la comunità dei veneziani di Alessandria, con il fine di fornire informazioni cruciali per la buona riuscita del commercio di Venezia con il Levante.
