The integrated social rank-attachment model and the development of depressive symptoms during adolescence

A large part of this thesis concerns the application of a model proposed by Sloman and his collaborators (i.e., Sloman, 2008 ; Sloman & Duhnan, 2004). This model integrates the social rank and attachment theories in relation to depression, such that the behavior of the individual and his place into the group of pairs (studied by Irons & Gilbert in 2005) and parents are taken into account. It is not only evaluated for non clinical adolescents belonging to different cultures (i.e., European and Latin American) but also for clinical depressed adolescents (hospitalized with a diagnosis of depression).In the second part of the thesis, the depressive symptoms of adolescents hospitalized with a diagnosis of depression are investigated, more specifically their general tendency towards an inhibition or an excitation (e.g., the presence of a psychomotor retardation or agitation). We have also studied the gait of the hospitalized adolescents, with the aim to observe a possible retardation, as was already observed in depressive adults (Lecrubier, 2006 ; Lemke, Wendorff, Mieth, Buhl, & Linnemann, 2000). RésuméUne grande partie de cette thèse est consacrée à l’application d’un modèle proposé par Sloman et ses collaborateurs (i.e., Sloman, 2008 ; Sloman & Duhnan, 2004), modèle qui intègre les théories du rang social et de l’attachement en lien avec la dépression, et qui prend notamment en compte la place du jeune et son comportement face au sein de ses groupes d’appartenance – tels que ses pairs (étudié par Irons & Gilbert en 2005) et ses parents – non seulement chez des adolescents non cliniques appartenant à différentes cultures (i.e., européenne et latino-américaine) mais également chez des adolescents cliniquement dépressifs (hospitalisés avec un diagnostic de dépression). Une deuxième partie du travail consiste notamment à approfondir la connaissance de la symptomatologie dépressive à l’adolescence en l’analysant sous l’angle d’une tendance générale de la symptomatologie vers l’inhibition ou l’excitation (e.g., la présence plutôt d’un ralentissement ou d’une agitation psychomotrice), chez les adolescents hospitalisés avec un diagnostic de dépression. Nous allons également évaluer chez eux leur démarche, afin d’observer l’éventuelle présence d’un ralentissement, tel qu’observé auparavant chez l’adulte souffrant d’un trouble dépressif (i.e., Lecrubier, 2006 ; Lemke, Wendorff, Mieth, Buhl, & Linnemann, 2000).
