[fr] Au XVIe siècle, la littérature de controverse réformée s’empare des figures de David et de Goliath afin d’illustrer par le récit biblique la lutte que le plus faible (ici, les Églises protestantes) livre, avec le secours de Dieu, contre l’Opposant gigantal (l’Église romaine). Cette communication entend présenter un aperçu des usages réformés de la figure de Goliath spécifiquement, quoique son pendant davidique ne soit jamais loin. La péricope surgit d’abord dans le théâtre de controverse en Suisse alémanique avant de gagner le théâtre de langue française ; elle passe ensuite dans les pamphlets et les satires. Afin de ne pas réduire l’analyse à une ‘histoire-titres’ qui accorde une place centrale à la péricope en tant que cadre polémique, on s’attachera dans un second temps à l’analyse d’un extrait du 'De haereticis non puniendis' de Sébastien Castellion en guise d’étude de cas : comment l’épisode biblique permet-il au polémiste d’adopter une posture rhétorique déterminante dans la querelle sur la punition des hérétiques qui l’oppose au réformateur Théodore de Bèze, « ce grand geant » ? [en] In the sixteenth century, Reformed polemical literature seized on the figures of David and Goliath to illustrate, through the biblical narrative, the struggle waged by the weaker (in this case, the Protestant churches), assisted by God, against the gigantic opponent (the Roman Church). The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the Reformed uses of the figure of Goliath specifically, although his Davidic counterpart is never far away. The pericope first appeared in controversial theatre in German-speaking Switzerland, before making its way into French-language theatre; it then spread to the prose of pamphlets and satires. To avoid reducing the analysis to a 'history of titles' that gives central place to the pericope as a polemical framework, we will then analyse an excerpt from Sebastian Castellio's 'De haereticis non puniendis' as a case study: how does the biblical episode enable Castellio to adopt a decisive rhetorical posture in the dispute over the punishment of heretics that pits him against the reformer Théodore de Bèze, "that great giant"?
