[en] Our knowledge of the paper used by the Mamluk chancery is entirely based on the description provided by al-Qalqashandî in his Ṣubḥ al-aʿshā. Starting with Karabacek’s Das arabische Papier (1887), various scholars have tried to figure out what the size of the sheets described by the Mamluk author could have been. No one realized that Karabacek’s calculations were based on a wrong reckoning. In the present paper, I propose to revisit this issue not only thanks to the correct calculation, but also by considering the documents themselves.
