En ce qui concerne les légendes fagnardes, elles ne manquent heureusement pas et sont, comme nous allons le voir, particulièrement diversifiées : actes notariés, dossiers judiciaires, enquêtes à propos de contestations territoriales, rapports d’administrations, mais aussi toponymes et mentions sur des cartes et plans anciens. Consulter et confronter leurs informations, contribue à établir l’origine des récits légendaires ayant pour cadre le haut plateau, éclaire sur leur évolution, surprend quant aux détours pris pour aboutir aux récits parvenus jusqu’à nous.
