Abstract :
[en] Jacques Balthazart is a Belgian behavioral neuroendocrinologist whose work focused on the neuroendocrine regulation of reproductive behaviors of birds, primarily based on studies in Japanese quail and songbirds. He is best known for his studies of the organizational and activational actions of sex steroids on the brain and behavior, the first comprehensive identification of the distribution of aromatase-immunoreactive neurons in the brain of any vertebrate, the functional role played by these aromatase positive cells in the neural circuits controlling male sexual behavior, the characterization of the genomic and non-genomic controls of brain aromatase activity and his work on the influence of sex steroid hormones on the development and seasonal plasticity of neural circuits underlying the production of song in songbirds. Overall, his career is a model as to how an investigator can systematically attack a fundamental question employing a wide range of methods over a long period of time.
