Änderungen an den Inschriften des thebanischen Grabes Nr. 84 im Auftrag des zweiten Grabbesitzers, Mery

Theban tomb no. 84 is an almost fully decorated and relatively well-preserved tomb with an exceptionally rich textual dimension in Sheikh Abd el-Qurna that was originally built for Iamunedjeh, an influential state official under the reign of Thutmose III. Iamunedjeh was overseer of works, first royal herald, overseer of the gate, and overseer of the granaries of Upper and Lower Egypt. Not long after Iamunedjeh’s death, TT 84 was taken over by Mery, the high priest of Amun under Amenhotep II, because the roof of Mery’s original tomb chapel, that of TT 95A, collapsed beyond repair. This takeover is reflected in the inscriptions of TT 84: the name and titles of Iamunedjeh and his wife, Henutnefret, were often substituted by those of Mery and his mother, Hunay.
The walls and ceilings of the tomb reveal a complex picture with several stages and patterns of intervention. While some of the texts were left untouched, others were modified more than once, and some were only partially repainted. This paper gives an overview of the different scenarios and investigates the rationale behind their distribution in the given spatial context.
