[fr] Le collège fétial, organe sacerdotal, fait partie des institutions archaïques majeures de Rome. La participation de ses membres à la constitution d’une pratique diplomatique proprement romaine en fait à ce titre un acteur important du développement de la jeune cité en empire territorial. Mais que savons-nous réellement de cette institution durant les périodes royale et républicaine ? Comment sont décrits et qualifiés ces prêtres, qui se distinguaient des autres prêtrises par leurs rites spécifiques ? La comparaison du vocabulaire utilisé par les auteurs antiques, aussi bien en langue latine qu’en langue grecque, permet d’apporter un nouvel éclairage sur la conception que les Anciens avaient de cette institution, dont l’existence républicaine est encore aujourd’hui fortement débattue. [en] The fetial college, a priestly body, is one of the major archaic institutions of Rome. The participation of its members in the constitution of a specifically Roman diplomatic practice makes it an important actor in the development of the young city into a territorial empire. But what do we really know about this institution during the royal and republican periods ? How are these priests, who differed from other priesthoods in their specific rites, described and qualified ? A comparison of the vocabulary used by ancient authors, in both Latin and Greek, sheds new light on the conception that the Ancients had of this institution, whose republican existence is still strongly debated today.
