Thérèse philosophe; L'académie des dames; Fanny Hill; Portier des Chartreux; Pornographie; Bassompierre
Abstract :
Ashbee. [en] If the Enlightenment book trade in Liège has not left many archives, two documents that have been little utilised offer new perspectives on what has been called by R. Darnton the "forbidden best-sellers of pre-revolutionary France". In 1851 was opened the "secret room" of the Veuve Huet, in which were kept some examples of the most audacious productions of the printer Jean-François Bassompierre, particulary in recard to pornography. In addition, two prospectuses published during the French Revolution and attributed to Bassompierre also mention some of those books. We try, notably by using the resources of material bibliography, to establish relationships between four titles which are mentioned, and which were supposedly printed by Bassompierre, and the bibliographical data abou them: "L'Académie des dames", "Thérèse philiposhe", "La fille de joie"(Fanny Hill) and "Le portier des Chartreux". We refer to recent studies by Fr. Moureau, E. Boussuge, C. Duflo, but also to forgotten studies, as one by H.S. Ashbee.
