Abstract :
[en] This chapter presents the operating principle of the Pumped Thermal Energy Storage (PTES), based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology. This technology consists in storing electrical energy under the form of heat for later conversion of thermal energy back into electricity. It mainly combines one or several thermal energy storage systems, a vapor compression heat pump and an Organic Rankine cycle system. All components and sub-components are described. The different main variants of configuration of PTES based on ORC technology are presented. Performance indicators are discussed. Finally, a technical state-of-the-art review of the technology is presented.
