[en] The landscapes of the Western European industrial crescent are marked by the presence of numerous slag heaps, the legacy of an intense mining activity that is no longer present. Left abandoned, these mountains of waste have been colonised by biological life and various citizen uses. The problem of their value reveals their hybrid nature: are they biological sites to be preserved from human presence, spaces available for popular emancipation or objects of working-class memory to be preserved intact? This problematic refers to the controversies on the future of the industrial city, divided between temptations of museification and regeneration of common spaces in the wasteland. This contribution questions the possibilities opened up by the Cultural Values Model, proposed by Janet Stephenson, to value and protect these elements of the landscape in a way that would be compatible with the respect and emancipation of the people who live there.
