[en] To understand the relationship between undocumented migrants and the public
space of the city of Brussels, I explored the advantages and limits of participant
observation. The research for this article was carried out from 2014 to 2016 as
part of a PhD project, and much of the fieldwork involved accompanying
research participants to different places and events around the city. In this
capacity, I was able to observe how borders followed people through the city and
how research participants appropriated space in spite of these borders.
