[en] This paper explores the concept of modality as it has been elaborated in French semiotic theory, distinctively from linguistic and logical approaches, at the instigation of A. J. Greimas, then widely used in text analysis. If modality originally refers to modal verbs (such as pouvoir, vouloir, savoir in French), soon the theoretical effort of semioticians has tended to assemble the different modalities into a semantic structure. As a first step, the work of five different authors will provide an opportunity for a general overview of the achievements of this undertaking. It will be noted however, as a second step, that consecutive extensions and justifications have not been without introducing contradictions in the theoretical conception of modality. The necessary developments will consequently be offered with a view to producing a more reasoned definition of the concept and a general revision of the semantic structure of modalities.
