[en] Herpesviruses are common infectious agents in equine practice and can be associated with very different clinical manifestations (respiratory, reproductive, neurological, ophthalmological, dermatological), although not always severe. Currently, 9 types of equine herpesvirus have been identified. The economic and pathological importance of the infection depends a lot on the type of herpesvirus that is responsible of the infection. Given its ubiquitous nature and potential of latency in infected individuals, it is not recommended to attempt confirmation of infection in horses that do not show clinical signs of disease. Knowing how to recognize the different clinical conditions associated with herpesvirus in the equine practice will allow us to optimize diagnostic confirmation and management of affected animals. This article systematically details the most practical aspects of infection by herpesviruses 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, aiming to become for the equine practitioner a practical guide to recognize, diagnose and treat possible pathologies caused by the different herpesviruses that can affect the domestic horse.
[es] Los herpesvirus son agentes infecciosos muy comunes en la clínica equina y se asocian con cuadros clínicos muy diversos (respiratorios, reproductivos, neurológicos, oftalmológicos, dermatológicos), aunque no siempre graves. Hasta la fecha se han identificado 9 tipos de herpesvirus equinos (HVE). La importancia económica y patológica de la infección dependerá enormemente del tipo de herpesvirus que esté infectando a nuestro paciente. Dado su carácter ubicuo y su potencial de latencia en los individuos infectados, no se recomienda intentar confirmar la infección en caballos que no presenten signos clínicos de enfermedad. Saber reconocer los diferentes cuadros clínicos asociados a herpesvirus en la práctica equina nos permitirá optimizar la confirmación diagnóstica y el manejo de los animales afectados. En este artículo se detallan de manera sistemática los aspectos más prácticos de las infecciones por herpesvirus de tipo 1, 2, 3, 4 y 5, pretendiendo proporcionar al veterinario de campo una guía práctica para reconocer, diagnosticar y tratar las posibles patologías causadas por los diferentes herpesvirus que pueden afectar al caballo doméstico.
