Abstract :
[en] Sex-ratio, gonadosomatic index, breeding season and fecundity of Clarias ebriensis Pellegrin were studied from 911 fish collected between May 99 and March 01 in the delta of the Oueme River, Benin. The sex-ratio, with predominant females (1:0.83) is significantly different from the theoretical sex-ratio 1:1 (chi(2) = 7.89, p < 0.05). But, the sex-ratio depends also strongly on the size of fish and the fishing techniques used. A different capture rate of the sexes was observed according to the months, with females being dominant in the captures in August (65.6%), during the period of reproduction. The peak-spawning period was obtained during the rising between September and October. The smallest collected mature female measured 7.0 cm for a weight of 3.0 g, while the smallest mature male measured 7.2 cm for a weight of 2.8 g. Average fecundity is estimated at 9,178 oocytes, the minimum being 4,638 oocytes and the maximum 22,543 oocytes. Relative fecundity ranged between 78 and 537 oocytes per gram of body weight. The average weight of an ovule was 0.8 +/- 0.4 mg. There is a linear relation between fecundity and total length, fecundity and total weight, and fecundity and ovary weight.
