Abstract :
[en] Fish population estimations (electro-fishing) were performed in May-June 1978 in the acid to neutral (pH 4,7 - 7,1), slightly mineralized (42-72 uS/cm) and very soft-water (2,4 - 4,4 mg/l Ca++) trout streams in the upper Roer basin (tributary of the river Meuse). 5 stations were surveyed. At pH 4,7, no fish was recorded. At higher pH (6,8-7,1), 4-6 species were caught, representing a total ichthyomass ranging from 618 to 1015 g/100 m2. Salmo trutta fario (L.) and Cottus gobio (L.) compose 44-99 % and 2,5-17,6 % of the total ichthyomass respectively. The biomass of the fish community and that of the Salmo trutta population, appear to be positively correlated with the water pH and alkalinity.. The relative biomass (in % of the community biomass) of Cottus gobio is negatively correlated with the absolute biomass of Salmo trutta (effect of interspecific competition for food or predation). The results suggest that the growth rate of the 1-year old Salmo trutta is inversely density dependent. The upper Roer fish community has not significantly changed over the 1958 - 1978.
