[en] This paper investigates the evolution of the spatial rationales of Tesnière’s syntactic diagrams (stemma). I show that the conventions change from his first attempts to model complete sentences up to the classical stemma he uses in his _Elements of structural syntax_ (1959). From mostly symbolic representations of hierarchy (directed arrows from the dependent to the governor), he shifts to a more configurational one (connected dependents are placed below the governor).
