Abstract :
[en] The society recognizes without hesitation the competence of the pharmacist in the field of drugs. If, as other health professionals, he has no obligation of result when he dispenses a medicine or a health product to his patient, he is nevertheless responsible for its quality, and must "not harm " this patient.
He must therefore be careful to ensure that all products he agrees to dispense have the required qualities, that they meet the legal obligations which they are subject to, and that they give sufficient guarantees of efficiency, and above all of safety.
In a European society which tends to combat the notion of monopoly, he only can keep the dispensing of the over-the-counter drugs if, in comparison with other candidates, he brings undeniable added value to this dispensation. Anyone can sell an aspirin tablet, but only the pharmacist can judge the suitability of this drug with the condition of the person who asks for it. He thus has to accept to exercise his skills, which has to be maintained and constantly improved, on a critical and structured manner, in all situations leading him to dispense OTC-products.
