Abstract :
[en] This paper examines a corpus of 39 short plays of the Spanish musical theater that deal with the cinema. The dialogue between the so-called género chico and the new medium cinema dates back to 1897 and adopts, in a roughly consecutive manner, five different modes: the re-staging of cinema’s first screenings and its spaces; make-believe cinema projections; the inclusion of projections as part of the play; the adaption of cinematic themes and plots, and, finally, the onstage appearances of characters the silver screen had made popular. The paper thus demonstrates that the first Spanish writers who showed interest in the cinema were not avant-garde poets or the essayists gravitating around Ortega y Gasset, and reflects on the historiographical cliché stating that structural or topical imitation of cinema is a sign of modernity.

Commentary :
