Abstract :
[en] The Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) can learn heterospecific vocalizations. Yet, in full song, an entire heterospecific song output seems to be a rare event. The most numerous examples of Chaffinches mimicking other species involve calls. The most frequent imitations are those of widespread, noisy species and very common breeders in or near the habitat of the Chaffinch. In the first part of the song (the trill), the imitations - as the other syllables - are usually repeated in series without reorganization of sound material. In this case, the vocal appropriation is an iterative process. The imitations incorporated in the final flourish, on the other hand, are more rarely repeated and some are not at all. They are almost exclusively short acute notes (e.g., calls of Motacilla alba or Sitta europea). Such recombinations increases the frequency span of this flourish and modifies at the same time both its composition and its rhythmic structure. In this case, it is a generative process. The Chaffinch has the capacity to produce very accurate copying. This faithful copying enables cultural transmission, for more than 40 years, of certain song types and heterospecific imitations. The juvenile seems to have some foreknowledge of the specific song’s syntax rules and the position of the heterospecific imitations in the song seems to be nonrandom. This foreknowledge might involve constraints that channel syllables into the appropriate section of the song. Among several European Chaffinch populations, the borrowed calls incorporated in the song’s final flourish are mainly short high-pitched notes. The following functions for some heterospecific imitations in this final flourish are suggested for Chaffinches : 1) Ranging hypothesis. The degradation of these high frequency notes might allow receivers to assess the distance of to the singer. 2) Sexual selection. The final flourish could be a sexy flourish, due to its broad bandwidth, syllabic diversity and dynamic rhythm. In this flourish, the heterospecific syllables’ acoustic structure could strengthen the supernormal nature of this vocal stimulus and might have a selective advantage.
