[en] In “Poema(s) da Cabra”, João Cabral de Melo Neto takes the figure of the goat, both "nordestino" (originating and tied to the Northeast of Brazil) and Mediterranean as his object. Qualifications, abilities, potencies are continuously added to the goat. However, in adding so much, what could have been a symbol – some material element that refers to an idea – actually becomes pure quality. The goat goes from being a study object to the intrinsic value of the nordestino. In order to build this path, João Cabral will use some of his well-known poetic resources, such as tone, form, rhyme and vocabulary. These components are analyzed alongside other not so frequently mentioned ones, so as to show the way by which these are intricately built onto the structure of the text, but also the way by which they operate to build the suggested effect: that of un object that is transformed in pure value.
