[es] El traductor no es un sujeto que se limita a efectuar elecciones individuales, sino un portavoz de una comunidad con un sistema de representaciones bien definidas sobre las relaciones entre culturas y lenguas, su configuración y grados de inteligibilidad. Al estar condicionada por la necesidad de adecuación al texto original y la de ser aceptable en la cultura destinataria, la traducción produce excedentes de sentido, efectos que desbordan el texto de partida y que pueden teñir todo un género, una literatura, una cultura. La presente compilación de estudios sobre la traducción en la historia de América Latina está guiada por el objetivo de estudiar, con base en casos concretos, las funciones culturales de la traducción, vinculada con sus soportes materiales y con los horizontes socioculturales de los traductores. Así, los trabajos reunidos abordan desde distintos ángulos la diversidad de transformaciones posibles que entraña la traducción en el ámbito cultural, a la vez que plantean –y buscan responder- cuestiones puntuales del quehacer de los traductores.
[en] Translators are not individuals limited to making decisions in isolation, but spokespersons of a community characterized by a well-defined representational system of both the relationships between cultures and languages, and their configurations and levels of intelligibility. Being conditioned by a need of adequacy to the source text, and of acceptability to the destination culture, translation produces a surplus of meaning, an array of effects that go beyond the source text and can leave a trace over a complete genre, a literature, a culture. This collection of essays about the history of translation in Latin American examines, on the basis of concrete cases, the cultural function of translations according to their medium, and the socio-cultural horizons of translators. To this extent, the collected essays consider from different perspectives the variety of transformations translation renders possible within the cultural sphere, as well as setting out –while trying to answer– specific questions related to the practices of translators.
