Abstract :
[en] In the field of image theory, current thinking frequently focuses on the links between image and movement. And for good reason, this link is essential: as already shown by the chronophotographic experiments of the pioneer of photography Etienne-Jules Marey, the image - although characterized by its fixedness - has always had a constant relationship with the idea of movement. Moreover, to observe the recent works of visual researchers, when the still image - pictorial or photographic - is now seen from the point of view of Dynamis, the moving image is increasingly regularly valued in its fixedness. The shot can thus be isolated from the cinematographic flow, for example, when its exposure value is questioned, or when it is erected as an emblematic image: filmmaker Stanley Kubrick spoke about such images as "non-submersible units" and required a large film to include at least six of them. The still image would be fundamentally linked to the perception of an energy, when the moving image would be dependent on the possibility of being immobilized. Far from being paradoxical, this observation defines in our eyes the dialectical nature of the image. Without wishing to definitively attribute to the latter the "fixed" or "moving" character, it will be important in the texts gathered here to propose a nuanced model, capable of concretely describing the rhythmic inherent in objects of the visual field. From the various fields of research that concern us, and by starting again from concrete and particular cases that arouse our curiosity, we will try to make our contribution to a transdisciplinary cultural science, convinced that only a transversal vision of the media will make it possible to capture the image in its complexity.
[fr] Dans le domaine de la théorie de l’image (que celle-ci soit matérielle, imagi- naire, animée, littéraire, onirique, etc.), la réflexion actuelle porte fréquemment sur les liens de l’image au mouvement. Et pour cause, ce lien s’avère essentiel : comme le montraient déjà les expérimentations chronophotographiques du pionnier de la photographie Etienne-Jules Marey, l’image – pourtant caractérisée par sa fixité – nourrit depuis toujours un rapport constant avec l’idée de mouvement. D’ailleurs, à observer les travaux récents des chercheurs concer- nés par le visuel, quand l’image fixe – picturale ou photographique – s’envisage désormais depuis le point de vue de la Dynamis, l’image animée est de plus en plus régulièrement valorisée dans sa fixité. Le plan peut ainsi par exemple être isolé du flux cinématographique, lorsque l’on interroge sa valeur d’exposition, ou lorsqu’il est érigé en image emblématique : le cinéaste Stanley Kubrick parlait à propos de telles images d’« unités insubmersibles » (non-submersible units) et exigeait d’un grand film qu’il en comprenne au moins six. L’image fixe serait fondamentalement liée à la perception d’une énergétique, quand l’image animée serait dépendante de la possibilité d’être immobilisée. Loin d’être paradoxal, ce constat définit à nos yeux la nature dialectique de l’image. Sans vouloir attribuer définitivement à cette dernière le caractère « fixe » ou « mouvant », il importera dans les textes rassemblés ici de proposer un modèle nuancé, capable de décrire concrètement la rythmique inhérente aux objets du champ visuel. Depuis les domaines de recherche variés qui nous occupent, et en repartant des cas concrets et particuliers qui attisent notre curiosité, on essaiera d’apporter notre contribution à une science culturelle transdisciplinaire, convaincus que seule une vision transversale des médias permettra de saisir l’image dans sa complexité.
