Abstract :
The recent publications of both a coin and a gem catalogue pertaining to the Isiac cults makes possible a useful comparison of these two kinds of historical sources that belong to very different areas. A systematic comparative analysis reveals highly significant similarities and differences, which refine our knowledge and understanding of the religious imaginary in the Greco-Roman world. Although a large number of depictions on gemstones are undoubtedly copies of monetary types, many others are original compositions created through various procedures, since the criteria for the image selection are not the same in the two fields. Thus, the glyptic repertoire appears to be richer and more complex than the numismatic one. It is therefore necessary to focus on their production frames, their networks of distribution and dissemination, their modes of perception and their uses, in order to attempt an understanding of their respective "raison d’être".
