Franz Brentano (1838-1917); History of Philosophy; Inner Perception; Intentionality; Analysis
Abstract :
[en] What, if anything, can we expect to gain in adopting a Brentanian approach to the mind? Within the field of contemporary philosophy of mind, two distinct motivations are usually put forward in order to justify something like a return to Brentano: His intentionality thesis and his theory of inner perception. I suggest (a) that these two motivations are much more controversial than it is usually believed and (b) that there nevertheless exists another, more convincing reason for going back to Brentano, namely, his theory of mental analysis.
