Abstract :
[en] Contrary to the usual affirmations, the myth of ‘Pope Joan’ was not destroyed by David Blondel (1647), but survived within the restricted circle of Huguenot intellectuals until the middle of the 18th century. Faithful to his convictions, Pierre Bayle saw in this blindness a proof of partisan bias. The Huguenots of the Refuge rejected this idea, claiming that their aim was simply to avenge Protestant scholarship unjustly mocked by the Catholics on this subject. But the true aim of the rehabilitation of Pope Joan was quite different. The objective was to denounce the Papist spirit of deceit, at a moment when the memory and the identity of the Huguenots was cruelly threatened.
