[en] Current popular concepts of biodiversity are examined, with particular application to Belgium, using a three stage analysis. The way in which the link was made between a scientific concept and a sociopolitical definition is analysed. Consideration is made of society's idea of 'nature' and the 'return to nature' concept. Ways in which the public can adapt its behaviour and ideals to protect biodiversity (local ecology programmes, environmentally friendly farming etc) are examined.
