Abstract :
[en] In recent years, environmental regulating bodies in marine sector have been prompted to enforced stringent rules with an ambitious aim to minimise carbon emissions originating from ships and other offshore energy components. Several energy management plans and alternative fuels have been explored and subsequently adopted, to attain carbon neutrality/emission reduction targets set for the year 2050. To stand cognizant with the IMO/MARPOL regulations for exhaust gases emissions, potential stakeholders in maritime sector including seagoing vessels are rigorously adopting energy management systems (EMS) and efficient alternate fuels to replace the conventional means of energy sources, fossil fuels in particulars. This book chapter presents a comprehensive review discussion along with several real time case studies encompassing emission policies regulated by IMO, and their overall response on the future of maritime transportation sector. It also includes opportunities and challenges associated with the adoption of low emission, sustainable/ green energy sources as fuels in order to attain the emission targets within the stipulated timeframe.
