Republic of Venice; Indian Ocean; Red Sea; Portuguese voyages
Abstract :
[en] During the 15th century what was known about the Indian Ocean in Venice came from travel narratives, often thought to be fantastic, and it was mediated through the Red Sea and the Mamluk Sultanate. In the early 16th century, however, after the first Portuguese expedition to India, there was an institutional and private turn of the knowledge about that part of the world. This paper illustrates how this turn can be tracked in Venice's private commercial correspondence and public records.
