[en] On the 1st of April 2022, one of the largest discussion and community website, Reddit, launched the second edition of their social experiment called “r/place” or “Place”. This unique experiment constitutes an ideal setting for the study of ephemeral organizing mechanisms in online environments. Our analysis of the experiment reveals five main organizing strategies that feature striking resemblance with Mintzberg’s configurations. What this suggests is that these configurations are not only a powerful diagnosis tool to understand traditional organizational forms, but might also be used to understand how online communities spontaneously try to frame and structure collective action.
