Abstract :
[en] Call 'synchronic unity' the kind of unity that is displayed by simultaneously existing mental phenomena—as when a subject sees, hears, judges, and desires at the same time. How are we to account for synchronic unity? I explore the view that several mental phenomena occurring at a time are unified in virtue of being parts of one overall mental phenomenon. One reason why this view seems to me to be attractive is that it is desirably neutral as regards the existence of a substantial Self. Being experienced as parts of one overall phenomenon is a necessary and sufficient condition for the unity of consciousness. Nothing more is required.
