2022 • In Barcus, Holly; Jones, Roy; Schmitz, Serge (Eds.) Rural Transformations. Globalization and Its Implications for Rural People, Land, and Economies
[en] This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the multidimensional, globally diverse spatial manifestations of rural change. It focuses on the causes and the implications of agricultural and land-use change, drawing upon examples from four continents. The book then documents the changes in agriculture and land use in the “agribusiness towns” of Dom Pedrito in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and Smithton in Tasmania, Australia and their hinterlands. It then focuses on the social and practical challenges faced by the female members of the extended family groups who make up the migrant labour force. Next, the book explores the complexity of rural systems, including the interactions between levels of decision-making, within a geographical context combining local resources and connectivity. It then describes local situations in the United States, Ireland, Poland and Burkina Faso, where international influences have profoundly transformed rural ways of life and society.
