Abstract :
[en] The concepts of ‘original’, ‘archetype’, ‘copy’, ‘error’, ‘variant’, ‘stemma codicum’ force the Romance philologist to deal with the difficulties related to textual criticism. The philologist’s main goal is to know the truth of a text, but does a univocal truth exist? And, above all, is it possible to achieve it using the instruments currently available to us? Avalle once talked about «doppia verità»: the truth of the manuscript, which is a synchronic reality, and the truth of the stemma, which is a diachronic reality. Similarly, regarding the stemma analysis, he identified «due punti di vista»: the top-down point of view, that focuses on the reception of the text, and the bottom-up point of view, that focuses on identifying the original. At first glance, one would assume that the two realities rule each other out, even though they do imply the existence of one another; and, actually, said assumption wouldn’t be misplaced, when we think about the purposes of the methods put forth by Bédier and Lachmann. However, medieval traditions are active, contaminated, interpolated and every manuscript has its own story and is the product of a specific cultural environment. Consequently, in spite of the imperfections and the limited reliability that come with Lachmann’s method, the stemma must be the starting point for a research based both on the diachronic and the synchronic perspectives. The case of the Fiorita reflects a widespread medieval textual tradition: it is a compilation work and it had a wide circulation, so it underwent interpolations, contamination, different redactions and different linguistic revisions. The study of the text’s tradition is unavoidable and it must, firstly, be carried out by considering manuscripts as separate cultural realities and, secondly, by analysing how manuscripts interact with each other, in order to identify the stemma. Most likely, the stemma won’t immediately be used to identify the original and it won’t lead the philologist to the absolute truth, but it will lead him to the «doppia verità» that characterizes every medieval tradition.
