Abstract :
[en] Since about a decade, our teaching sphere has become a sort of Utopia for digital materials, including a good number of Open Access documentations. In nowadays situation, teachers have to face the following question, which is, indeed, an existential one : What is an original, stylish, dynamic, and timeless content for language learning/teaching ? This presentation aims to share the experience of Japanese language lessons held in a European university during these last 2 academic years. Firstly, we discover the “Language Lounge creating project”. It focuses on a creation of a real language learning space in university building (in renovating a standard language class). Called “Language Lounge” (“Espace L” in French), this space seeks to provide to students and teachers a relaxed atmosphere to “live” real situations in target languages, in meeting, talking, singing, cooking and yogging (yes !) with native speakers. This is not an online learning device, but much more. We forget computers, put smartphones in our bags. And we move. Secondly, we present “Urashima Taro project”, realized for 10 weeks (20 hours) with 10 students of B1 level. In this project, students worked on a 17th Century Japanese handwritten book, “Urashima Taro”, using a high-definition PDF file available on the internet thanks to Open Access policy of university library. Understanding this traditional Japanese story required of students to master many abilities, in using their different knowledge and senses. Visualizing the traditional hiragana and kanji calligraphy as well as beautiful gold-decorated illustrations, reading and understanding the old text and rewriting the story in an easy Japanese, to tell the story to Japanese students coming to Europe (the project was presented in a cultural event organized in February 2019 in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) and translating it in their mother tongue, to show the story to their friends who don’t speak Japanese. If learning a language is useful to build a bridge to “others”, who are these “others”? It is not only native speakers of the language students are learning (in our case, Japanese native speakers), but also those who don’t know and don’t speak this language around. In other words, we do live with “other people” coming from everywhere, even in our family, our house. Online or not online? The real question is probably not this one – but to know how to use the contents, for that the learning experience leaves a strong impact on the learner’s 5 senses, in their minds and bodies.
