This paper aims at providing new insights on the risk drivers underly- ing the value premium documented by Fama and French (1993). By using news stories supplied by Thomson Reuters, we seek to explain comove- ment in value and growth stock returns from common information factors embedded in news. We also distinguish between information coming from common news stories and idiosyncratic shocks concerning a smaller subset of firms. This framework allows us to answer three questions: 1) Is there a common risk factor in the news which explains the value anomaly? 2) Is idiosyncratic news information priced? and 3) Does the amount of media attention to an information prime over the polarity of this information? Regional   climate   models   (RCMs)   are   suitable   numerical   tools   to   study   the   surface   mass balance (SMB) of the wide polar ice sheets due to their high spatial resolution and polaradapted physics. Nonetheless, RCMs are driven at their boundaries and over the ocean by reanalysis or global climate model (GCM) products and are thus influenced by potential biases in these largescale fields. These biases can be significant for both the atmosphere and the sea surface conditions (i.e. sea ice concentration and sea surface temperature). With the RCM MAR, a set of sensitivity experiments has been realized to assess the direct response of the SMB of the Antarctic ice sheet to oceanic perturbations. MAR is forced by ERAInterim and anomalies based on mean GCM biases are introduced in sea surface conditions. Results show significant increases (decreases) of liquid and solid precipitation due to biases related to warm (cold) oceans. As precipitation is mainly caused by lowpressure systems that intrude into the continent and do not penetrate far inland, coastal areas are more sensitive than inland regions. Furthermore,  warm ocean representative  biases lead to anomalies as large  as  anomalies simulated by other RCMs or GCMs for the end of the 21st century. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

We present here a rapid, easy, reliable and cost-effective method for the quantification of 25-hydryxoyvitamin D2 and D3, epi-25-hydroxyyvitamin D3 and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 by LC-MS/MS in serum samples. The proposed methodology has been strongly validated with both NIST and Labquality materials, obtaining mean intra-assay and inter-assay imprecision lower than 6 and 6.4% and mean recoveries within 95-104%. Besides we have compared satisfactorily samples from Vitamin D Standardization Program (n=80) with reference values and patient samples (n=281) with our reference LC-MS/MS method. The proposed methodology is prepared to be used in routine testing and permits the calculation of the Vitamin D Metabolite Ratio (VMR). [less ▲]

Two abrupt shifts in d18O and trace element contents of a stalagmite from the northwestern European continent (southern Belgium) suggest that two cold anomalies occurred beginning at 8.4±0.04 and ending at 8.15±0.03, possibly reflecting climatic effects associated with the 8.2 ka event. The younger of the two anomalies lasted about 30 years, from 8.18 to 8.15±0.03 ka, with a maximum d18O amplitude of 1.4‰. Trace element (Sr, Ba and Mg) peaks coincide with this second drop of d18O. The anomaly initiation is marked by Sr, Ba and Mg concentration peaks suggesting drier conditions during the coldest years, consistent with previous research in the North Atlantic. The earlier anomaly in trace element, d18O records is associated with generally cold but wet conditions at 8.4 ka, lasted 50 years, and ended abruptly. The interval from 8.4 ka to 8.15 ka was less favorable for speleothem deposition, with denser speleothem calcite deposition and lower growth rate, consistent with a cold, dry climate. The clear recovery in both temperature and rainfall between after both anomalies (8.2 and 8.4 ka), suggests that these anomalies are distinct, and may represent two episodes of AMOC weaking related to the drainage of proglacial lakes Agassiz and Ojibway. In this presentation, we discuss the role of citizen science in the governance of nuclear incidents/accidents in emergency preparedness, response and post-disaster recovery. Starting from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, we (1) trace the expansion of citizen science in the nuclear field to other countries and contexts; (2) ask how citizen-science concepts, methods, and toolsets challenge institutional approaches to preparedness and response to nuclear incidents/accidents and post-disaster situations; and how nuclear safety authorities respond to such challenges; (3) probe the possibilities of incorporating citizen-science concepts and practices into Belgian and European approaches to nuclear emergency response, preparedness, and recovery. Our research draws on qualitative methods in Interpretive Policy Analysis and Science and Technology Studies to highlight the contentious politics that characterize interactions between citizen scientists and nuclear authorities in Japan and other countries. It anticipates the emergence of hybrid citizen-science forms, comprising material artifacts (e.g. new radioactivity measurement devices) and discourses (e.g. on the role of science in society), which simultaneously challenge and accommodate institutional approaches to nuclear emergency preparedness and response. By comparing citizen-science initiatives in Japan and Belgium, the project sheds light on citizen science as an emerging pattern of governance and probes its problem-solving capacities and long-term viability. This study was carried out at the experimental farm of Vienam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) during six months from August, 2016 to February, 2017. H'mong chickens were raised in three plots in order to observe reproductive performane and egg quality. The results showed that productive performance of H'mong chickens was low in comparison with other local breeds. On average, the first egg laying age was 151.67 days when their body weight was 1323.8 grams. Twenty two to forty two week-old hens resulted in the average reproductive performane as 24,12 eggs/hen, laying rate as 17.23 percents, and FCR as 6.58 kg/10 eggs. Egg quality of H'mong chickens conformed to all standards of high-quality local eggs. [less ▲]

In 2008, Australian fiction writer and essayist Gail Jones spent four months in Shanghai as a guest of the Chinese and Shanghai Writers Associations. During this time, two of her earlier novels were published in Chinese. Although a non-sinologist, Jones has shown an interest in China, and more generally in Asianness, from her childhood onwards, which she spent on the outskirts of Broome, a small town whose majority population was Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Filipino and Aboriginal. Consequently, as she claims in her essay “‘I am Chinese’: Of Bodies and Walls, Of Boundaries and their Dissolution” (2016), in which she critically assesses her own writing – “not to suggest equal status or literary parity, of course, but because tropes of perspective, walls, and bodies are a remarkably beguiling connection between writers and artists looking from the outside to China” (Jones 2016, 87) –, she “saw and experienced the deep appeal of an Asian-indigenous multiculture” (Jones 2016, 88), and her fiction “tends to narrate cross-cultural encounters, often thematising ignorance or cultural misunderstanding”. Engaging with her sinophile fiction (Five Bells, “Touching Tiananmen”) and non-fiction (“‘I am Chinese’: Of Bodies and Walls, Of Boundaries and their Dissolution”), my paper will investigate how, both metaphorically and metadiscursively, Jones crafts Chinese aesthetics in an Australian space and cultivates cross-cultural encounters between characters and readers alike, as “the task of writers and scholars is […] to address the gaps, to mount tiny incursions, to find those narratives that heaven cannot quite cover over” (Jones 2016, 91). The 2016 Belgium Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth is the first systematic evaluation of physical activity (PA) behaviors, related health behaviors, health outcomes, and influences thereon, using the Active Healthy Kids Canada grading framework. A research working group consisting of PA experts from both Flanders and Wallonia collaborated to determine the indicators to be graded, data sources to be used, and factors to be taken into account during the grading process. Grades were finalized after consensus was reached among the research working group and 2 stakeholder groups consisting of academic and policy experts in the fields of PA, sedentary behavior, and dietary behavior. Eleven indicators were selected and assigned the following grades: Overall PA (F+), Organized Sport Participation (C-), Active Play (C+), Active Transportation (C-), Sedentary Behaviors (D-), School (B-), Government Strategies and Investment (C+), and Weight Status (D). Incomplete grades were assigned to Family and Peers, Community and the Built Environment, and Dietary Behaviors due to a lack of nationally representative data. In conclusion, despite moderately positive social and environmental influences, PA levels of Belgian children and youth are low while levels of sedentary behaviors are high. [less ▲]

The London-van der Waals dispersion forces arising from instantaneously induced dipoles in molecules are a key ingredient in a wide range of phenomena in physics, chemistry, and biology. Therefore, the ability to control and manipulate dispersion forces between atoms and molecules is of great importance. Because those dispersion interactions depend crucially on the electronic properties of the molecular systems, a simple route to achieve this would consist in manipulating their electronic states. The recent development of ultra-short optical pulses has given researchers unprecedented control over the electronic degrees of freedom. These pulses, tailored in their frequency and envelope, allow the generation of a strongly out of equilibrium population of electronic states. We show how the Hamacker constants characterizing the London-van der Waals interaction between two molecules subject to an optical pulse can be calculated using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) or standard quantum chemistry methods and present several test cases of molecules subjected to IR and UV attosecond pulses. Immigrants and family members in the home and host urban spaces often experience inequalities in access to social protection (Faist, 2016, Amelina, 2017). Focusing on healthcare, we demonstrate that immigrant families today respond to healthcare needs of family members here and there through four cross-border strategies. We show that Andean transnational family networks based in Brussels select and articulate these different strategies to assemble transnational health care arrangements. The arrangements we follow are based in the urban area of Brussels but are connected to other urban spaces in southern Europe and Latin America in which migrants have developed networks of informal and formal support. Using an intersectional approach, we argue that heterogeneity markers such as gender, race, class and levels of transnational engagement determine the choice between different types of arrangements (Mahler et al. 2015). We support our argument with multi-sited (Marcus, 1995) ethnographic data collected with 48 members of 10 Andean transnational family members during fieldwork in Belgium, Colombia and Peru. [less ▲]

Zoning or hazard mapping exercise is often utilized by policymakers and public authorities to manage disaster risks. This exercise is only possible when potential risks have already been identified, quantified and assessed by scientific experts at the outset. In other words, unidentified or unrecognized risks will not appear on the map, hence become invisible from administrators and the public. As Ulrich Beck (2008) described, “so long as risks are not recognized scientifically, they do not exist – at least not legally, medically, technologically, or socially, and thus they are not prevented, treated or compensated for”. This paper examines the role of expert institutions and authorities in defining, thus making (in)visible, risks through zoning/mapping exercise prior to and in the aftermath of disasters. This map, once established, forms the legitimate base and functions as the authority to categorize citizens into different status and its associated rights. The paper attempts to deconstruct this transformation process of hazards into risks, the territorialisation of risks via mapping, whereby matters that are scientifically uncertain or intangible would be made circumscribable both spatially and temporally. Our paper uses two case studies, one on evacuation zones after the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the other on hazard mapping prior to volcano eruptions in the Lesser Antilles, to illustrate how this political and administrative tool of zoning reifies hazards, thus making any disaster risks appear “manageable” and controllable by the authorities, and results in creating de facto different categories of affected populations, which triggers tension and division within the communities as well as in the scientific community. We also examine the role of independent experts and citizen mobilisations in challenging these zoning policies and contesting the management of territorialised risks. [less ▲]

Today, more than 50% of the world's population lives in cities; the urban population is projected to reach 85% by 2100. Mainly due to urbanization and e-commerce, the demand for urban freight transport (both forward flows and reverse flows) is clearly growing. But, transport is also responsible for a large share of urban air pollution as well as noise nuisance. Thus, an integrated logistics system to optimize transport network and service design, as well as vehicles routing of a variety of modes has to be developed. The objective is to determine how to efficiently move freight by means of these services and vehicles, while reducing negative environmental impacts. The topic includes research questions related to the demand to be serviced, the type and number of facilities needed to store and consolidate freight, the better utilization of vehicle capacity (fill rate and fewer empty trips: on average, 25% of goods vehicles in Europe run empty) and the reduction of energy consumption. [less ▲]

The measurement of the operator motions can lead to innovation in the field of human-robot collaboration. Motion capture data can be used for robot programming by demonstration as well as controlling and adapting robot trajectories. To measure motion, IMUs represent an interesting alternative compared to other sensing technologies such as vision. In order to illustrate this strategy, a demonstrator has been created to command a robot by human motion. Two IMU sensor modules are set on the human arm and forearm. The orientation of the module with respect to the inertial frame is computed by the fusion of accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope data. This information coupled with a simple human arm kinematic model is used to compute the wrist trajectory. The accuracy of this measurement has to be quantified. For that purpose, the estimated trajectory based on the IMU measurement is compared to the trajectory measured using a reference 3D optoelectronic motion analysis system (Codamotion, Charnwood Dynamics Ltd) available in the Laboratory of Human Motion Analysis of the University of Li`ege. [less ▲]

This talk was presented to the boards of French universities in order to share the Ulg model and good practices in ethics. The integrated approach includes actions coordinated by the Council for Ethics and Scientific Integrity (CEIS) which are developed simultaneously through 5 axes. Researchers are involved at all levels of the process, directly or as representative of their group. 1. Training: Sensitization and education to ethics; development of professional capacities, incl. data analysis & open data; seminaries with supervisors and PhDs ("duos") 2. Forum: ethics on the public space – Seminaries, conference, round tables, intervision, discussion and exchange on questions, dilemma, case-studies, with the help of external experts 3. Research appraisal: requirement for an ethics appraisal of each research project, with a special focus on human and social sciences, with the help of disciplinary ethics committees 4. Ethics analysis: Analysis of special questions, complains, problems, and decision making in case of violation of integrity 5. Regulation: Writing of procedures, dissemination of documents, recommendations and case-studies, link to the HR Strategy for researchers and the Charter and Code. This presentation aimed to exchange about what was done, the actual and expected impact of actions, what is going right and wrong, and how ULg is managing this dynamics as part of the HR Strategy for researchers project. In the Monte Carlo method, quantities of interest for the application are calculated through statistical sampling of interaction processes. Gamma spectroscopy is a widely used technique, well-illustrated by the following list of examples: Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring, nuclear industry, geochemical investigation, and astrophysics. Most radioactive sources produce gamma rays, which are of various energies and intensities. Geant4 (for GEometry ANd Tracking) is a platform for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter, using Monte Carlo methods. The GEANT4 toolkit allows the simulation of the following physical processes: the photo-electrical effect, the Compton Effect, the electron-positron pairs generation and the Rayleigh diffusion. Our study shows the combination of gamma spectrometry, development of related Monte Carlo equation and the presentation of the Geant4 toolkit for gamma spectrometry simulation (simulation of the interaction of gamma photon through matter). It is clearly found, at the end of this study, that Monte-Carlo simulation is a useful, inexpensive alternative that also provides greater flexibility and gained time when determining the detector response and efficiency during an environmental monitoring. In the relation between human kind and nature, humans are often the strong and the environment the weak. Humans destroy animals’ habitat, affect biodiversity and cause climate change. By their behaviors, they also threaten future generations. Progressively, the law has started to regulate this relation and environmental law has emerged. Quickly, taxes and tax incentives have been considered a useful mean to achieve environmental protection. This contribution tells the story of how taxes and tax incentives have been used in Belgium to influence human behaviors towards a greater protection of the environment. In particular, it addresses the issue of climate change, by focusing on two aspect of this question: the development of renewable energy and sustainable transport. It is divided in two parts. The first one presents the current tax measures in relation with this question while the second one deals with their ability to achieve their goal. [less ▲]
