this paper will offer an overview of procedures allowing EU agencies to determine the equivalence of third country regulatory regimes and conceptualise the accountability challenges they pose. Proceeding in three parts, the first part will identify and classify the different third country equivalence procedures in place. Analysing the legal basis for agency intervention and the specific powers granted to the respective agencies in that respect, this part will allow to develop a topology of two different equivalence roles conferred on EU agencies. Building upon this descriptive analysis, the second part will identify two accountability challenges associated with each of the identified third country equivalence procedure categories. Seeking to overcome those challenges, the third part of the paper will make four pointed suggestions aimed at recognising explicitly and in a more centralised way the external action powers conferred on EU agencies. Doing so would at the very least allow better to tailor modifications to the external action frameworks against the background of which existing equivalence procedures currently already implicitly operate. The disposal of radioactive wastes in deep underground repositories has been studied for some years (OECD/NEA, 1995). Argillaceous rocks are good candidates to host the repositories mainly because of their low permeability. In the case of France the Callovo-Oxfordian argillite (COX) has been chosen by the national agency ANDRA to be the host rock to store the radioactive waste. During the previous years, the problem of gallery excavations in the COX host rock has been deeply studied in Université de Liège; especially the simulation of the damaged zone (EDZ) created in the surrounding of the galleries during their excavation (Blümling et al. 2007). The problem, involving strain localization, is not well posed when modelled using classical mechanics; to overcome this, a microstructured model is used: local Second Gradient (Collin et al. 2006), this avoids the pathological mesh dependency by introducing a regularizing internal length. At the moment, the constitutive models for the COX take into account several transverse anisotropies: in situ stress state, elastic moduli, saturated permeability and plastic, this is achieved by the use of a fabric tensor that influences the cohesion (Pietruszczak et al. 2002). Classic elasto-plastic models like Drucker Prager and Van Eekelen, with cohesion softening, are appropriate to model the evolution of the EDZ, but they fail at reproducing the long term convergence of the gallery. To solve that, a visco-plastic model, independent from the plastic model, has been added. The object of this researchis to study, by means of numerical simulations using Lagamine, the evolution of the GED and GCS galleries after the excavation and during a period of 100 years. The value of 100 years is retained because of the necessity to keep the stability of the underground repository and allow an eventual manipulation of the waste with newly developed technologies in the future. In this paper, I argue that although the notion of responsible research and innovation (RRI) is manifestly absent in research programs for radiation protection and nuclear research and training, RRI is increasingly recognized, and mobilized, by various actors in the field; is an essentially contested concept; and facilitates the development of a sizeable network comprising actors with a variety of roles, expectations and stakes, including researchers in the social sciences and humanities (SSH). To sustain these points, I draw on my experiences as an embedded social scientist in nuclear research, singling out sites and instances (e.g. the crafting and dissemination of the 2015 Ricomet Public Declaration, SSH research within the EU-Concert framework, conversations with radiation protection researchers) where RRI is explicitly discussed, propagated, negated, or transformed. This exploration highlights recurring challenges of “translating” RRI to radiation protection research, such as the strong evaluative connotation of RRI and its top-down character; the lack of industry involvement in RRI processes; the tight connection between RRI and new and emerging technologies; and the hybridization of SSH through inter- and transdisciplinary research. I discuss each of these challenges in turn, with the aims of reflexively considering how RRI is co-produced in radiation protection research through negotiations between stakeholders and the interplay of practices and artifacts; and what the potential implications of these processes are for SSH engagement in the field. What strategies do migrants living in European cities use to challenge inequalities in access to healthcare, participation in the labor market and the creation of social support networks? The papers in this panel aim to respond to this question by drawing from transnational and intersectional approaches conceptualizing inequalities as sets of relationships between people and broader structures in which interactions generate better opportunity for some more than for others (Tilly, 2000). Panel participants consider that these interactions and the benefits that can be obtained through migration are affected by various social categories such as gender, class, sexual identity, transnational connections, and citizenship. Intersectional approaches allow to examine how these axes of inequality (Crenshaw, 1989; Anthias, 2001) simultaneously affect migration outcomes and also how they operate differently according to the geographical space in which they develop: origin and host societies as well as transnationally. Nonetheless, the papers presented in this panel will also emphasize migrants’ agency to resist or conform to the inequalities they face. Overall, this panel aims to contribute to the study of migration and inequality at the conceptual and methodological levels. At the theoretical level, the panel will build on new debates on the reproduction of intersectional inequalities in transnational settings (Faist, 2016, Amelina, 2017). At the methodological level, all paper presenters have use multi-sited ethnographic methods (working in cities such as Madrid, London, Milan, Brussels and Frankfurt) and will therefore use the panel as an opportunity to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of such method. Very often, we hear: “Is it still worth going to space? Aren’t there better causes to spend our money on, here on Earth?” At this talk, Pierre Rochus will highlight the importance of the benefits that space activities and space research bring. He will try to convince the credulous that besides those everyday space applications that we obviously can no longer do without (GPS, for instance!), space science activities are also essential for humanity. Space research not only gives answers to fundamental questions facing humanity but the technical design of future missions also poses a challenge to the collective imagination. Space scientific research is not only an intellectual challenge, it is much more: it is a stimulus for technical developments; it requires constant, leading-edge developments in different technical domains such as:  systems miniaturisation,  light detectors,  new materials,  coatings,  cryogenics,  mechanisms,  electrical motors,  tribology (the study of friction, wear, lubrication, and the design of bearings)  ... Space Research gives rise to spin-offs and unpredictable developments which will come in useful in our future daily life. One hope is that some part of the huge budgets dedicated to military research could be transferred to space activities. And, of course, it is very important to convince young people to study sciences and technology - where better to start, than in space? [less ▲]

Controlling the timing to flowering is an essential aspect of agriculture, either by delaying flowering to maximize storage in root crops or by initiating flowering when conditions are favorable to maximize seed or fruit production. The extensive studies on the model Brassicaceae Arabidopsis thaliana revealed dozens of genes whose mutation alters flowering time. Comparatively, relatively little is known about the genetic mechanisms controlling flowering in Pooideae, a group of grasses that includes important crops such as wheat, barley, and oat. In recent years, Brachypodium distachyon—a small grass from the Pooideae group—has been increasingly used as a model plant to study the genetic mechanisms controlling developmental processes in temperate grasses, including flowering. Here, we report our recent contributions to the comprehension of the mechanisms controlling flowering time in Brachypodium: (i) we used a quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis to identify genomic regions controlling flowering under a variety of photoperiod and vernalization conditions. This analysis was carried out on a recombinant inbred line population resulting from the cross between Bd21 and Bd1-1, two accessions with contrasting flowering behaviors. We identified six significant QTLs, three of which colocalized with major flowering regulators (VERNALIZATION1/PHYTOCHROME C, VERNALIZATION2, and FD), while others were not associated with known flowering-time genes. The genetic regions corresponding to these QTLs were further analyzed to identify candidate genes possibly involved in the control of flowering time. (ii) We used forward genetic screens to identify new flowering-time mutants, which are currently being analyzed. The characterization of the genes identified through these approaches will contribute to improve our knowledge of the molecular networks governing the transition to flowering in temperate grasses. BACKROUND: Emergency Medical Services (EMS) routinely work at the very limit of their capacity due to growing emergency rooms visits and residents’ shortage. In this context, EMS workers are regularly asked to work more than 10 hours a day, on varying shifts and with short recuperation breaks. Two approaches can be used to reduce fatigue-related risk: reducing the likelihood a fatigued operator is working (i.e. fatigue reduction), or reducing the likelihood a fatigued operator will make an error (i.e. fatigue proofing). In Emergency Medical Services, formal risk control mainly focuses on reduction strategies such as reducing work hours while proofing strategies develops as an implicit element of the safety system. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose is to identify individual proofing and reduction strategies used by emergency residents and to investigate how they relate to fatigue, performance and patient safety indicators. METHODS: First, we conducted 4 focus-group sessions with a total of 25 EMS residents to elicit perceived consequences of fatigue and strategies used to cope with them. Focus group results were used to design a questionnaire assessing how often EMS residents personally used any of the strategies reported during sessions. Second, we administered the questionnaire to a larger sample and conducted a prospective observational study with a repeated within-subjects component. A total of 45 EMS residents participated in the study for a total of 400 shifts analyzed. We gathered sleep diaries, subjective sleepiness, reaction time, self-reported medical errors and performance ratings at different time point during both day and night shift using an android-based application. Sleep time and activity levels were confirmed using wrist actigraphy. DISCUSSION: We will discuss what can be drawn from our results in terms of individual and collective resilience processes with a focus on the potential for implementation of more formal processes at a system level.  [less ▲]

Proxima Cen b is possibly the nearest rocky exoplanet orbiting in the habitable zone of its star and might represent by consequent a formidable opportunity for astrobiology. In this presentation, we discuss several possible atmospheric compositions and present the corresponding infrared spectrum computed with modern planetary atmosphere models. To be specific, we consider (1) a bare planet, which has lost its atmosphere; (2) a water-ocean planet; (3) an Earth-analog planet; and (4) a planet similar to Earth but with a lower O2 pressure (< 1mbar) that produces a false positive for the triple signature (H20, O3, and CO2). We discuss the information contained in each infrared spectrum and the possibility to constrain the nature of the planet by remote sensing. We end this presentation by describing an instrumental concept recently proposed to ESA and optimised for this task. [less ▲]

The discovery of an increasing number of terrestrial planets around nearby stars marks the dawn of a new era in the exoplanet field: the characterization and understanding of their atmospheres. To make significant progress, it becomes clear that a large number of exoplanetary atmospheres have to be studied at various wavelengths. This is particularly relevant for identifying possible bio-signatures. In this talk, we present a concept of a space-based mid-infrared nulling spectrograph that can characterize a large number of exoplanetary atmospheres and provide key information on their size, surface temperature, and the presence of key molecules such as CO2, H2O, CH4 and O3. Bien que peu étudiée jusqu'ici, la reconstruction de la collégiale Saint-Martin est une des entreprises monumentales majeures du XVIe siècle à Liège. Le bâti et les archives conservées permettent d'appréhender, parfois avec précision, la chronologie et les modalités de la reconstruction de cette église. Ainsi, au chantier du chœur, dont la première pierre est posée en 1511, succède le chantier du transept et de la nef, qui fait l'objet d'un contrat signé en 1539 entre le chapitre et le maître maçon Paul de Richelle. Dans cette communication, nous proposons un focus sur les quatre premières années du chantier de la nef et du transept. La période située entre 1539 et 1543 constitue en effet un moment riche en événements clefs. En mars 1540, le chapitre de la collégiale demande explicitement à ce que la façade sud de l'église soit construite en priorité. En plus de nous fournir les motivations esthétiques et pratiques de ce choix, la décision prise par les chanoines nous permet de circonscrire avec précision les travaux qui sont entamés dans un premier temps, et ainsi de pouvoir les analyser finement. De plus, cette première phase est marquée par le décès tragique de Paul de Richelle en 1541, ainsi que par l'implication dans le chantier d'une des personnalités majeures du milieu de la construction en vallée mosane. Cette communication aura donc pour but de mettre en lumière le déroulement du chantier, d'en présenter les acteurs majeurs et de mettre au jour les nombreux changements qui se sont produits dans l'intervalle de ces quatre années. En mettant en relation les données archivistiques, dont la plupart sont inédites, avec les données acquises grâce à l'étude du bâti, nous analyserons l'impact de l'ensemble de ces éléments, tant sur l'organisation du chantier que sur les choix formels et esthétiques. Vortex coronagraphs are among the most promising solutions to perform high contrast imaging at small angular separations from bright stars. They enhance the dynamic range at very small inner working angle (down to the diffraction limit of the telescope) and provide a clear 360 degree discovery space for high-contrast direct imaging of exoplanets. In 2013, we installed and commissioned an L-band coronagraph in LBTI/LMIRCam and obtained outstanding images of the four planets around HR8799 during the first hours on sky. In this presentation, we will present the results of the latest data reduction performed with the VIP software that is developed at the University of Liège and that features state-of-the-art image processing algorithms inherited from the field of background subtraction in computer vision (including machine learning algorithms and low rank modeling algorithms). We will also present the results obtained with the second L- and M-band coronagraph that was recently installed in LMIRCam to enable binocular Vortex observations. During the first observations (October 2016), we tested and validated a new real-time post-coronagraphic tip-tilt sensing technique (called QACITS) to quickly align each beam on the center of their respective Vortex coronagraph and obtained observations of a young star showing disk features near the resolution limit of each aperture. Finally, we will present some exciting prospects for the Vortex coronagraph that will be installed on VISIR and ELT/METIS. [less ▲]

The oxygen green line at 557.7 nm corresponds to the 1S →1D forbidden transition of the O atom. It shares the same upper level as the 1S→ 3P UV line at 297.2 nm. The green line is a major component of the visible terrestrial dayglow spectrum and accounts for the dominant color of the high-latitude auroral display. The 297.2 nm emission was first detected with spectrometers on board the Mariner missions. It has since has been observed at the limb in the Martian dayglow with the SPICAM (Mars Express) and IUVS (MAVEN) spectrographs. The sources of the 1S excitation in the Mars dayglow are electron impact on O, photodissociation and electron impact dissociation of CO2 and CO and dissociative recombination of O2+ ions. [less ▲]

Natural estrogens (estrone: E1, 17-β-estradiol : E2, estriol : E3) and synthetic estrogen (17-α-ethinylestradiol: EE2) are powerful endocrine disruptors. They may have deleterious effects on aquatic wildlife and also humans even at extremely low concentrations. For this reason, these molecules have been included in a watch list from the European Commission regarding emerging aquatic pollutants. The maximum detection limits are set at 0.035 and 0.40 ng/L for EE2 and E1, E2 respectively. Reaching such low levels of concentration of estrogenic compounds is a challenge, even using state-of-the-art analytical methods. In this study, we developed a UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS method allowing the quantification of E1, E2, E3 and EE2 residues in aqueous matrices. Studies commonly used ESI in negative mode albeit the poor ionization efficiency of native estrogenic compounds in this mode. In this study, the molecules were derivatised using a sulfonyl chloride reagent (pyridine-3-sulfonyl, P-3-S). The resulting response in the positive mode was significantly enhanced. Similarly to other dansyl derivatives, the product ion spectra of the P-3-S derivatives indicate ions originating from the derivatization reagent moiety. Moreover, several other ions were included in the product ion spectra of the P-3-S derivatives. Their specificity was assessed by a qualitative approach implying the analysis of different types of water samples (groundwater, surface water). Some product ions were found to be noticeably better for quantification and confirmation of the analytes. The developed analytical method was validated according to the NF T90-210 norm which is suitable to assess the performances of a method in the water quality field. The limits of quantification were 0.04, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.02 ng/L in groundwater and 0.89, 0.79,4.42 and 0.29 ng/L in surface water for E1, E2, E3 and EE2 respectively. [less ▲]

We analyze the ultraviolet nightglow in the atmosphere of Mars through Nitric Oxide (NO) δ and γ bands emissions. On the dayside thermosphere of Mars, solar extreme ultraviolet radiation partly dissociates CO2 and N2 molecules. O(3P) and N(4S) atoms are carried by the day-to-night hemispheric transport. They preferentially descend in the nightside mesosphere in the winter hemisphere, where they can radiatively recombine to form NO(C2Π). The excited molecules promptly relax by emitting photons in the UV δ bands and in the γ bands through cascades via the A2Σ, v’ = 0 state. These emissions are thus indicators of the N and O atom fluxes transported from the dayside to Mars’ nightside and the winter descending circulation pattern from the nightside thermosphere to the mesosphere (e.g. Bertaux et al., 2005 ; Bougher et al., 1990 ; Cox et al., 2008 ; Gagné et al., 2013 ; Gérard et al., 2008 ; Stiepen et al., 2015, 2017). Observations of these emissions have been accumulated on a large dataset of nightside disk images and vertical profiles obtained at the limb by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS, McClintock et al., 2015) instrument when the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft is at its apoapsis and its periapsis phases along its orbit, respectively. We present discussion on the variability in the brightness and altitude and of the emission with season, geographical position and local time and possible interpretation for local and global changes in the mesosphere dynamics. IUVS images and limb scans reveal unexpected complex structure of the emission. The brightest emission is observed close to the winter pole. The emission is also surprisingly more intense in some longitude, revealing possible impact of tides and waves in Mars’ nightside mesosphere. Observations also reveal spots and streaks, indicating irregularities in the wind circulation pattern. The disk images and limb profiles are compared to the LMD-MGCM model (Gonzàlez-Galindo et al., 2009 ; Lopez-Valverde et al., 2011) to focus on the seasonal, local time and geographical influences on the NO Nightglow emission. We will also provide a statistical study of the regions of enhanced brightness (i.e. splotches and streaks) and discuss possible interpretation from the comparison to the GCM. [less ▲]

Compaction of arable soils is a consequence of tillage systems and agricultural machinery traffic year after year. Its negative effects on crop production and on the environment have been put into evidence by several studies. However, soil compaction is a complex phenomenon and the understanding of the involved mechanisms related to agricultural practices still remains limited. This contribution aims to study the influence of the interaction between traffic intensity and tillage system on soil compaction. Soil samples were taken from topsoil (0.07-0.25 m), plough pan (0.30-0.35 m) and subsoil (0.35 – 0.52 m), on plots under long-term reduced tillage (RT) and conventional tillage (CT). For each tillage system, intensive traffic zones (IT) and non-intensive traffic zones (NT) were considered. Swelling index (Cs), compression index (Cc), precompression stress (Pc) obtained by oedometer test, porosity (n) and water content obtained by gravimetric determination were chosen to characterise the soil mechanical properties. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed to study the effect of the depth, the tillage and the traffic intensity on the variables measured, with the water content as covariable. The results show that, after ten years of reconversion from CT to RT, the plough pan is still present in RT and its compaction appears as important as in CT ( nRT-30cm = 36.9% , nCT-30cm = 38.0%, p-value = 0.098). In subsoil, the compression index was high in CT, as well as in RT (CcRT = 0.150 kPa-1, CcCT = 0.148 kPa-1, p-value = 0.617), involving that this layer remains susceptible to compaction under heavy loads. Moreover, the mean value of the precompression stress (meanPc = 92±34 kPa) remains lower than stresses induced by heavy machines such as beet harvesters. The results also show that the presence of two traffic zones induces a spatial heterogeneity in the field (CcIT = 0.138 kPa-1; CcNT = 0.154 kPa-1, p-value = 0.031). These main results could be used in computational modelling to develop decision support systems to mitigate the effects of soil compaction. [less ▲]

The classical diametral dimension (Bessaga, Mityagin, Pelczynski, Rolewicz), denoted by "Delta", is a topological invariant which can be used to characterize Schwartz and nuclear locally convex spaces. Mityagin also introduced a variant of this diametral dimension, denoted by "Delta_b", using bounded sets in its definition, contrary to "Delta". In this talk, we present some conditions assuring the equality of these two diametral dimensions for Fréchet spaces. Among these conditions, there is the notion of existence of prominent bounded sets, due to Terzioglu. In fact, it appears that the existence of prominent sets is implied by the property "Omega Bar" of Vogt and Wagner. Finally, we describe a construction which gives Schwartz and nuclear non-Fréchet spaces E verifying "Delta_b(E) = \Delta(E)". [less ▲]

The discovery of lead compounds that can modulate the activity of a biological target is essential to provide efficient pharmacological tools and to serve as starting points for new drug generations. Fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) approach is an attractive tool for the identification of new selective inhibitors of a target of interest, but its success largely depends on the ability to develop screening bioassays capable to detect and gauge weak affinity binders. To achieve this goal, we investigated capillary electrophoresis (CE) for identifying and ranking fragments from an initial library. Indeed, due to its ability to evaluate weak interactions, CE seems to be promising for fragment-based screening. This technique is a powerful analytical tool with a unique separation mechanism, speed, efficiency and versatility. Its main advantages are low protein consumption, higher throughput compared to NMR and X-ray crystallography and the fact that screening can be carried out using native protein in physiological solution without the need of immobilization. We developed a proof of concept study on thrombin, a serine protease implicated in the coagulation cascade using affinity capillary electrophoresis (ACE) for ranking fragments from an initial library. For this study, we followed a probe ligand, benzamidine, and we investigated interactions with the target by monitoring the changes of its electrophoretic mobility upon binding. The first step of this study consisted in the optimization of the experimental conditions suitable for the CE method (target and probe ligand concentrations, separation buffer composition, voltage, separation effective length, target partial filling…). Then, numerous thrombin inhibitors with a wide range of inhibitory potency (i.e. Ki 200 µM – 5 nM) were tested to validate our system demonstrating the possibility to fish binders in the optimized conditions. We also checked the absence of non-specific binding with the target using the inactivated enzyme at the binding site. It is noteworthy that in this operating system (ACE assay), binding occurs in free solution using physiological buffers, thus preventing artifacts that may result from target immobilization, which is a requirement for some techniques such as SPR. Alkaloids are a class of naturally occurring organic nitrogen-containing bases that are found primarily in plants. They display a huge diversity with more than 3,000 different types already identified. Next to their different pharmacological and therapeutic effects, alkaloids can have a deleterious impact on organisms as they are known to be neurotoxic and cardiotoxic for mammals and insects. In the current context of worldwide bee decline, occurrence of such compounds in floral production, i.e. nectar and pollen, raises major concerns. They could be beneficial to bees by protecting them against disease and pathogens but they could also cause toxicity. Until now alkaloids, and their effect on human health, are mainly studied in vegetative parts of plants. More recently the natural occurrence of alkaloids in nectar was also studied to investigate their effect on bee health. Whereas nectar chemicals can relatively easily and quickly be analyzed by chromatography, extracting chemicals from low pollen amount remains a challenge because of pollen structure and complexity. However, characterization of pollen chemicals can lead to valuable insight in their impact on pollinators allowing the development of mitigation strategies. In this study, we used a UHPLC-(ESI)-Q-ToF/MS method allowing the identification and quantification of alkaloids in pollen matrices from four Aconitum species; A. lycoctonum, A. napellus compactum, A. napellus neomontanum and A. variegatum. Alkaloid extraction was performed using bead-beating disruption of the pollen sample and chromatographic analysis was carried out on an Acquity UPLC system interfaced with a Synapt G2 QTOF. The separation was achieved in gradient mode on an Acquity UPLC BEH C18 column and detection was performed in electrospray positive ionization mode (ES+). Alkaloid concentrations were measured as aconitine equivalents by using a pure aconitine standard as reference compound. The total amount of alkaloids in Aconitum pollen ranged from 0.75 to 1.20 mg/g with 859 different compounds detected, some of them being pollen-specific. Statistical analyses were conducted on the global dataset to assess both quantitative and qualitative interspecific differences. One-way analysis of variance was performed on the total alkaloid content while a permutational test of multivatiate analysis of variance was used to compare the alkaloid profiles among the four Aconitum species. These coefficients count the number of times a finite word appears as a subsequence of another finite word. Similarly to the Sierpiński gasket that can be built as the limit set, for the Hausdorff distance, of a convergent sequence of normalized compact blocks extracted from Pascal triangle modulo 2, we describe and study the first properties of the subset of [0, 1] × [0, 1] associated with this extended Pascal triangle modulo a prime p. Then we create a new sequence from this extended Pascal triangle that counts, on each row of this triangle, the number of positive binomial coefficients. We show that this sequence is 2-regular. To extend our work, we construct a Pascal triangle using the Fibonacci representations of all the nonnegative integers and we define the corresponding sequence of which we study the regularity. This regularity is an extension of the classical k-regularity of sequences. [less ▲]

De la même façon, dans le comptage verbal, il est nécessaire de maintenir temporairement l’élément qui vient d’être compté afin de pouvoir déterminer l’élément suivant. Alors que la plupart des études s’accordent pour montrer un déficit de l’administrateur central chez des enfants présentant un trouble spécifique des apprentissages en mathématiques, l’altération de la mémoire à court terme (MCT) verbale et visuo-spatiale reste beaucoup plus discutée. Néanmoins, la plupart des recherches ayant exploré le lien entre MCT et dyscalculie développementale ne tiennent pas compte des récentes études comportementales, en neuroimagerie et des modélisations de la MCT distinguant le traitement de l’information « item » et « ordre » en MCT. Nous présenterons donc une série d’études dans le développement normal et atypique démontrant l’importance du traitement de l’ordre sériel en MCT dans le développement des habiletés mathématiques. Overhead athletes often develop, over time, a tightness of the posterior structures of the shoulder, which may be associated with injuries. Ten symptomatic (with pain) and ten asymptomatic players with a tight shoulder were compared and the effect of a self-applied stretching program was evaluated. Before and after the stretching program, pain and stiffness of the shoulder were evaluated. Our results demonstrate that risk factors for shoulder pain such as glenohumeral internal rotation deficit and total range of motion deficit may only be limited in symptomatic athletes. The mobility of the shoulder was significantly improved after the stretching program for both groups. Pain was reduced when present. Because of the limited differences between the symptomatic and asymptomatic athletes, clinicians may find it advantageous to initiate early prevention or rehabilitation programs. [less ▲]

Les fouilles entreprises durant les années 2002-2010 sur le site de la Schola del Traiano (IV, IV, 15) à Ostia Antica ont révélé l’existence d’une domus tardo-républicaine - la Domus aux Bucranes (60-20 av. J.-C.) - dont le système décoratif de IIe style (pavements, enduits peints et reliefs de stuc, plafonds) est apparu exceptionnellement bien conservé dans les couches les plus profondes de la parcelle urbaine concernée. Ce système décoratif - actuellement en cours de publication - a déjà été présenté à la communauté scientifique lors de différents colloques et journées d’études internationales. Il n’est pas question d’y revenir dans le cadre de la prochaine rencontre de l’AIRPA. En revanche, nous souhaiterions y présenter un lot d’enduits peints de Ier style jetés pêle-mêle dans les couches de préparation du tapis de mosaïque de la Chambre des Nains - un oecus aménagé durant les années 40-30 au sein de cette même domus tardo-républicaine. Restés inédits jusqu’à ce jour, ces fragments comptent parmi les plus anciens jamais découverts à Ostia Antica et leur position stratigraphique - scellée entre deux pavements bien datés - offre à n’en pas douter matière à réflexion. L’ensemble de ces fragments a fait l’objet d’une documentation systématique et des analyses archéométriques ont été portées sur les mortiers et les pigments des éléments les plus significatifs. Ce sont les résultats de cette entreprise scientifique que nous souhaiterions présenter lors du colloque de l'Aquileia afin de pouvoir intégrer cet ensemble décoratif de Ier style dans un corpus plus large - une mise en relation étroite avec le matériel contemporain découvert dans le Latium. Banana fruit (Musa sp.) ranks fourth in developing world's production, and has economical and nutritional key values. The popular and most dominant variety of the dessert banana group is the Cavendish variety, and Plantain represents that status for the cooking banana group. Despite the importance of the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are secondary metabolites with a high vapour pressure, in their utility in the plant protection and communication processes, they were never documented for the plant itself. Thus, the aim of this PHD thesis is to study the VOCs emitted by the plant, rather than their fruits or flowers. A protocol was optimized for the extraction of the banana plant's VOCs. The results of the first analysis showed 11 VOCs for the Cavendish, mainly (E,E)-α-farnesene (87.90 ± 11.28 ng/µl), methyl salicylate (33.82 ± 14.29) and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (29.60 ± 11.66), and 14 VOCs for the Pacific Plantain cultivars, mainly (Z,E)-α-farnesene (799.64 ± 503.15),(E,E)-α-farnesene (571.24 ± 381.70) and (E) β ocimene (241.76 ± 158.49). Most of these compounds belong to the terpenes group (8 for Cavendish, 10 for Pacific Plantain). The other compounds detected were ketones, esters and aldehydes. Eight compounds were common between the two varieties (myrcene, Z and E β-ocimene, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2 one, 6-methyl-3,5-hepadien-2-one, a-farnesene, methyl salicylate and β-ionone). This exploratory study paves the way for an in-depth characterisation of VOCs emitted by Musa plants. [less ▲]

Given that those mechanisms each harbour incongruent expectations regarding the organisation and functioning of independent NCAs, failure to acknowledge such incongruence may in practice lead to less effective competition law enforcement. The UltraViolet Spectrograph (UVS) and the Jupiter InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) observed the polar aurora during the perijove phase of the first Juno orbit (PJ1) on 27 August 2016. The UVS passband includes H2 bands that are directly excited by collisions of auroral electrons with H2. The JIRAM L-band imager includes some of the brightest H3+ features between 3.3 and 3.6 μ m. The intensity if this IR emission depends on both the column density of H3+ and the temperature in the emitting region. A series of spatial scans obtained every 30 s is used to build up images of the polar regions. JIRAM’s spatial resolution was about 100 km/pixel during most of the observations reported here while UVS has a substantially lower resolution (about 250 km/pixel). Concurrent observations were obtained during about 70 min in the north. We present a set of simultaneous ultraviolet and infrared images and point out similarities and di ff erences in their morphology and brightness distribution. The time evolution in the two spectral domains will be described and interpreted in terms of energy of the auroral electrons, time history of the precipitation and lifetime of the H3+ ions. Ultraviolet color ratio maps visualize the spatial distribution of the characteristic energy of the primary auroral electrons. Other supporting information is provided by the H3+ temperatures and column density maps derived from the analysis of JIRAM spectra covering the 2-5 μm interval. [less ▲]

Bifidobacterium crudilactis, a bacterial species from bovine origin, growths on bovine milk oligosaccharides (BMO). Cell free spent media (CFSM) from B. crudilactis and 3’-sialyllactose (3’SL), a major BMO, modulated Escherichia coli O157:H7 virulence gene expressiona. In this study, the SHIME® gastrointestinal model was inoculated with 4 different treatments: 3’SL (ttm1), B. crudilactis (ttm2), 3’SL and B. crudilactis (ttm3) and CFSM from 3’SL and B. crudilactis culture (ttm4). In each section of the colon, samples were collected and analysed for short chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentration using HPLC, microbial populations using 16S rDNA metagenetic analysis and correlated with E. coli O157:H7 virulence gene expression. The results showed that SCFA levels were stable during the experiments. Metagenetic analysis showed a microbial diversity in transverse (TC) and descending colon (DC) close to feces, dominated by Bacteroides, Prevotella and Fusobacterium, while the ascending colon (AC) showed a different microbial diversity dominated by Veillonella. Ttm4 and ttm2 induced mainly a down-regulation of virulence genes: fliC in DC with ttm4, and luxS, stx1, qseA in AC, DC or TC with ttm2. Ttm1 also showed a down-regulation of fliC in DC, similar to the one observed with ttm4, but this was associated with an up-regulation of fliC and stx1 in AC or TC. Finally, ttm3 showed slight upregulation of ler, fliC and qseA in AC. These results show that ttm4 and ttm2 might have a positive effect against virulence expression of E. coli O157:H7. However, this trend has to be validated with the further replicates on the SHIME® system. [less ▲]

The Juno mission offers a unique opportunity to study Jupiter, from its inner structure to its magnetospheric environment. Juno-UVS is a UV spectrograph with a bandpass of 70<lambda<205 mn, designed to characterize Jupiter’s UV emissions. One of the main feature of UVS is its scan mirror, which allows targeting specific UV features that are located +/- 30 ̊ perpendicular to the Juno spin plane. Juno provides a unique vantage point in Jupiter’s system to perform observations otherwise not possible from Earth. During Perijove 3 (PJ time: 11 December 2016 at 17:04 UTC), Io went into eclipse on Dec. 11th from 17:38:43 to 19:52:25 UTC. At that time, Juno was flying over the South Pole and observed the Io footprint from 17:50 to 22:04, with nearly continuous time coverage. Since Juno is spinning at 2 rpm, the Io footprint was observed once every 30 sec. The atmosphere of Io is mostly composed of SO2, with a small contribution of SO, S2, and NaCl. Whether its atmosphere is sublimation driven or supported by the volcanic activity is being controversially debated over decades. Studying the response of Io’s footprint brightness as it enters and leaves eclipse provides a novel method to probe its atmospheric response to a diminution of the solar flux. We will present the observations of this event and how the interaction strength of the interaction between Io’s ionosphere and the magnetosphere of Jupiter evolve during the eclipse. [less ▲]

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of Jupiter’s aurora, supporting the Juno mission, started on 30 Nov 2016. So far, they successfully covered orbits PJ03 to PJ06. After PJ07 in July 2017, the HST campaign will be interrupted by a solar avoidance period, preventing any observations from late August to the end of December 2017 (PJ08 to PJ10). The campaign will resume with PJ11 and continue until the end of HST cycle 25 (PJ15). Here, we present a brief summary of the HST data that has been acquired so far. It shows a broad range of auroral morphologies, suggesting that the Juno mission is sampling di ff erent facets of Jupiter’s magnetospheric activity. One should keep in mind that HST will not last forever. We should be ready to switch to the James Webb Telescope and take advantage of the overlap between the HST and JWST missions to prepare a smooth transition. The numerous infrared observations of Jupiter’s aurora obtained from ground based telescopes during Juno and obviously with Juno-JIRAM demonstrate that we can expect much from the tremendous performances of the JWST NIRCam and NIRSpec instruments. Juno polar low-altitude energetic particle observations indicate that the most intense emissions from Jupiter’s main auroral oval are caused by the impingement onto the atmosphere of relatively flat, energy-monotonic electron distributions, often extending to energies >1 MeV. They can be associated with bi-directional angular beaming with upward fluxes greater than the downward fluxes. Downward fluxes of >800 mW/m^2 have been observed. However, when viewed in high time resolution ( 1.0s) these distributions are sometimes (3 of 8)) intermixed with >50keV downward accelerated electron distributions with the classic inverted-V configuration, indicative of steady magnetic field-aligned electric fields. The highest downward energy peak observed so far is 400 keV. The inverted-V energy distributions lack the high energy tails observed in adjacent regions, and thus, contrary to what is observed at Earth, the associated downward energy fluxes are generally lower than the downward energy fluxes associated with the more intense energy-monotonic distributions. The relationship between these two modes of auroral particle energization is unclear. Do the classic auroral processes that create inverted-V distributions become so powerful that instabilities are stimulated that cause stochastic energization to turn on and dominate, or do these two different forms of auroral acceleration represent distinctly different processes? Currently, Juno’s Ultraviolet Spectrograph (UVS) has observed the Jovian aurora during five perijove passes. On each pass, UVS observes Jupiter for 10 hours centered on closest approach in a series of swaths, with one swath per 30s spin of the Juno spacecraft. During this time the range to the aurora drops from 6 RJ to 0.3 RJ or less in the north (and reverses this in the south), so that spatial resolution and coverage change dramatically. The UVS scan mirror is used to target di ff erent features, as the auroral regions are generally much larger than UVS’s 7-degree long slit can accommodate in a single swath. Typically, the scan mirror position is changed every 2 -5 Juno spins, to track specific targets or just raster across the entire auroral region. Since UVS only observes any particular location for 17 ms/swath, the series of swaths provide snapshots of ultraviolet auroral brightness and color. A variety of forms and activity levels are represented in this data set, and many have been described before with HST observations, but are seen here with higher spatial resolution. One interesting result is that in false color images (where RGB colors are assigned to long, medium, and short UV wavelengths, respectively), the emission morphology often alternates red and blue, in a way similar to patterns expected of large scale current systems. Further results which emerge as the UVS data are compared with data from the other Juno auroral instruments will also be presented. [less ▲]

The present work focuses on the solution of fluid-structure interaction problems involving free surfaces and deformable structures. Free-surface flows are often encountered in reality, but the numerical solution of such problems remains a challenge, especially when the flow interacts with some flexible structure. The Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) is nowadays a well-established Lagrangian method for the study of free-surface flows. The key feature of this method is the continuous remeshing of the computational domain through an efficient Delaunay triangulation, based on which the equations are solved using classical Finite Elements. In this work, the PFEM is coupled to Metafor, an in-house non-linear Finite Element solver, through an original partitioned strategy, based on block Gauss-Seidel iterations with dynamic relaxation. The main advantages of using a partitioned approach are that independent formulations can be employed for the fluid and the solid domains, and that the capabilities of already existing codes can be exploited at their best. In particular, in the problems proposed in this work, the solid structures can undergo very large deformations, and complex material laws, including plasticity for instance, can be easily taken into account. The techniques developed in this work are assessed through many examples, ranging from civil engineering problems, such as a dam break against a deformable obstacle, to aerospace applications, such a bird strike. Accurate numerical prediction of the whole ductile failure process is still a challenge. The adequate numerical scheme has to concord with the physical reality composed of an initial diffuse damage step followed by ultimate localised crack initiation and propagation. Currently, two main modelling philosophies exist. On the one hand, continuous approaches, described by damage models, are suited for diffuse damage, but are unable to represent physical discontinuities. On the other hand, discontinuous approaches are suitable to describe crack propagation behaviour and other localised processes, but fail in diffuse damage prediction of ductile materials. Moreover, they do not usually capture triaxiality effects or in other words, in-plane stretch effects, which are mandatory for accurate ductile failure simulations. To describe the ductile failure process, the numerical scheme proposed here combines both approaches and by this way, their respective advantages: an implicit non-local damage model combined with an extrinsic cohesive law in a discontinuous Galerkin finite element framework [1]. An application example of this scheme is shown on the attached figure with a comparison of the experimental force-displacement curve [2]. An implicit non-local model [3] is involved to model the initial diffuse damage stage. Upon damage to crack transition, a cohesive band [4] is used as cohesive law in order to introduce in-plane stretch effects during the crack propagation. This model is based on the assumption that all the damaging process occurs inside a band of small but finite thickness ahead of the crack surface. The strains inside this band is obtained from the neighbouring strains and from the cohesive jump. Then, the stress-state inside the band and the cohesive traction forces on the crack lips are deduced from the underlying continuum damage model. Short coupling beams in wall structures work predominantly in shear and develop complex deformation patterns. For this reason they cannot be modelled based on the classical plane-sections-remain-plane hypothesis, and are typically designed with strut-and-tie models. However, because strut-and-tie models are inherently conservative, they can result in very large amounts of shear reinforcement (stirrups), and therefore significant construction difficulties. In addition, strut-and-tie models do not provide information about the deformation capacity of coupling beams, which is important for performance-based seismic design. To address these challenges, this paper discusses a three-parameter kinematic theory (3PKT) for the shear strength and deformation patterns of short coupling beams. The 3PKT approach is situated between simple and conservative strut-and-tie models and complex non-linear finite element (FE) models. While FE models use a large number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) to describe the deformation patterns in coupling beams, the 3PKT method is based on a kinematic model with only three DOFs. Concrete frame structures often include both slender and deep beams. Deep beams possess a large shear capacity, and thus are typically used as transfer girders to carry heavy loads over large spans. The overloading of such members due to extreme events such as earthquakes may result in the collapse of the entire structure. To evaluate the resilience of large frame structures under extreme loading, it is necessary to model the interaction between the deep girders and the rest of the structure in an accurate and computationally effective manner. To address this issue, this paper proposes a mixed-type modelling framework by formulating an innovative 1D macro deep-beam element and coupling it with 1D slender elements. The new macro element aims to combine the accuracy of 2D micro finite elements with the simplicity of 1D macro elements. The paper summarizes the formulations of this element, based on the three-parameter kinematic theory, and integrates it into an existing global nonlinear analysis procedure to create a mixed-type modeling framework. The verification study, including a frame structure with a deep transfer girder, has shown that this approach captures the response of the frame with an accuracy similar to that of 2D micro finite elements, while requiring approx. 20% of the analysis time. Une des conséquences majeures de la conquête romaine fut la diffusion du latin et de la culture romaine dans les pays soumis. Plusieurs textes de l’époque impériale pourraient faire croire que le latin est devenu une langue universelle utilisée à travers tout l’Empire romain : Pline l’Ancien, Plutarque, Pline le Jeune, Martial, saint Augustin. Qu’en est-il en réalité ? Rome n’a pas développé de politique linguistique. Son attitude à l’égard des problèmes sociolinguistiques fut souple et adaptée aux exigences réelles de chaque situation. Sous la République, on constate en effet une grande souplesse dans l’utilisation des langues par les magistrats romains lorsqu’ils sont en contact avec la Grèce. Même si le bilinguisme est fréquent chez les Romains de la République, dans la sphère publique, le latin conserve un rôle de langue de prestige, langue de la domination de Rome. Malgré cette souplesse, une concurrence naturelle s’est instaurée entre la langue des dominants et celle des dominés. En Occident, le latin devint l’unique langue de communication, orale comme écrite, tandis qu’en Orient, on assiste à une situation paradoxale : l’hellénisation des Romains, due au statut culturellement élevé du grec. Cette situation dichotomique n’implique toutefois pas un fractionnement en deux camps imperméables aux influences linguistiques et culturelles réciproques : ni l’Orient ni l’Occident ne sont deux domaines complètement fermés. The aim of this study is to verify—thanks to computer musical analysis—if downbeats and backbeats placements are different when a drummer plays in a hard rock or in a funk style. In other words, does beat placements contribute to the heaviness of hard rock? In the field of popular music, many authors admit that there are three ways of placing the bass drum and snare drum beats with respect to metronomic time: either an anticipation, a perfect coincidence, or a slight delay. While the repertoires where the notes coincide with the metronomic time are often described as mechanical and a little cold, the anticipated notes would have a more propitious character to the dance and the delayed notes, would produce a music with a heavy character. These impressions were very often mentioned by those working on heavy metal (Waltzer, Brennan), but they have not been scientifically proven to the extent that these variations are counted in milliseconds. Two new IRCAM software, Audiosculpt and OpenMusic, now make it possible to measure very precisely these smallest variations. Thanks to this software, I will analyze the snare and bass drum hits in a few funk and hard rock songs released in 1970: James Brown's Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine and Super Bad (with "Jabo" Starks on drums) (which were already analyzed in Danielsen’s Presence and Pleasure, 2006). These songs will be compared with Black Night by Deep Purple (Ian Paice on drums), Uriah Heep's Gypsy (Alex Napier on drums) and Led Zepplin's Immigrant Song (John Bonham on drums). With this small sample, I will of course not be able to draw conclusions for hard rock as a whole, but if differences appear, it will be necessary to work on metadata to know if delaying the beats is a representative practice or simply a clean playing style for some drummers. Within the framework of its Digital Single Market (DSM) agenda, the European Union proposes the adoption of new legislative proposals aimed at removing remaining obstacles to digital transactions. Proposals relate to the abolition of geo-blocking as well as data and copyright portability. Complementing competition law provisions, those initiatives would seek to create the conditions for a competitive e-commerce environment within the EU internal market. In doing so, the Commission implicitly but clearly seeks to replicate a regulatory and policy approach it had taken already from the 1990s onwards when liberalising the energy and electronic communication sectors. It can be submitted that the European Commission, in proposing its DSM regulation strategy and in setting the terms of its e-commerce sector inquiry, has paid insufficient attention so far to the various and complementary roles competition law can play in a more strictly regulated market environment. In an attempt to clarify the scope and role of EU competition law and its enforcement in a digital single market environment and to guarantee its coherent application with the proposed DSM regulations, this paper will reflect on the roles competition law can our should still play in this context. Proceeding in three parts, the first part of the paper will chart the interaction between competition law and market regulation proposals in the EU’s DSM context. Using examples from the geo-blocking, data portability and copyright proposals made, this part highlights how the EU institutions perceive the interaction between competition law provisions and market regulation in this context. On the basis of that analysis, the second part will frame the interaction between competition law and market regulation as perceived in the DSM strategy, by comparing it with earlier examples in the realm of energy and electronic communications. In doing so, this part will identify two important similarities (breaking up barriers to trade and facilitating cross-border competition) as well as two fundamental differences (absence of natural monopolies and of intensely state regulated sectors). Acknowledging those similarities and differences, it will be submitted, allows better to conceptualise the role of competition law in the particular DSM context. To that extent, the third part will present and analyse the tenability of three possible roles competition law can still play against this background. Assessing the advantages and limits of each approach, that part will invite the Commission to take a clearer stance regarding the choice of one of them. [less ▲]

Stress based topology optimization has received great interest since almost 20 years because of the innovative designs that can be achieved to answer strength requirements. Fatigue is an important mode of failure in mechanical engineering and accounting for it as soon as the early stage of design using topology optimization sounds primordial. Literature reports many good results for shape optimization [Mrzyglod & Zielinsky(2006)] whereas in the field of topology optimization several authors have shown that considering fatigue in an optimization framework leads to more relevant solutions where fluctuating loads are involved [Holmberg E.(2015), Collet et al(2016), Svärd(2015)]. In order to check the good behavior of the implementation, we first investigate the implementation of an advanced fatigue criterion, i.e. the multiaxial Dang Van criterion [Dang Van et al(1989)], in the framework of a density-based topology optimization problem. The choice of this fatigue criterion is justifed by its good applicability in automotive or aeronautic industry as well as its relevancy with respect to experimental results. We present the sensitivity analysis with stress constraints and present some classical benchmarks to illustrate the behavior of the optimized solution. In a second time, we introduce the fatigue resistance in the well-known microstructural design [Sigmund (1999)]. The new additive manufacturing techniques allow to fabricate components exhibiting architectured materials. In this perspective, ensuring the fatigue resistance of the cellular material will by extension ensure the structural integrity of the overall structure itself. Both types of optimization framework are evaluated in term of their numerical performances and are compared to classical results generated by a regular stress-based topology optimization. Finally, the results are 3D-printed to assess for their manufacturability. [less ▲]

Spaces Snu are metrizable sequence spaces defined by Jaffard in the context of multifractal analysis and signal treatment. From a functional analysis point of view, the study of these spaces points out some topological properties, such as the facts they are locally pseudoconvex in general and locally p-convex in certain cases, Schwartz, and non-nuclear. In this talk, we focus on two topological invariants, namely the diametral dimension (Bessaga, Mityagin, Pelczynski, Rolewicz) and the property "Omega Bar" (Vogt, Wagner). Firstly, we revisit a result of Aubry and Bastin giving the diametral dimension of locally p-convex spaces Snu and extend it to some non-locally p-convex spaces Snu. Secondly, we explain how these developments can be used to prove that a subclass of spaces Snu (among which the locally p-convex ones) verifes the condition Omega Bar. [less ▲]

L’objectif principal de ce partenariat est la gestion des ressources par les Agences et Administrations en les dotant d’un outil innovant et opérationnel d’aide à la décision leur permettant de remplir leurs missions régionales (programmes d’intervention, SDAGE, …), nationales et internationales (DCE, rapportage européen, …). Pour atteindre cet objectif, le partenariat se base sur le développement d’une suite logicielle répondant aux attentes des opérateurs. Since 2004, a team of students and researchers of University of Liege takes part to the Shell Eco Marathon race with a lightweight electric vehicle. The goal of this pedagogical project is to design, fabricate and operate a vehicle exhibiting the least energy consumption. A key factor to reduce the energy consumption is to minimize the vehicle mass. Besides the body structure made of CRFP, engineers have also to focus on the weight reduction of any mechanical parts of the powertrain, transmission and of rolling gear. The combination of topology optimization with additive manufacturing techniques allows to propose innovative designs exhibiting a high performance to weight ratio. Topology optimized designs are often characterized by a high geometrical complexity that is not possible to manufacture without 3D printing. This work presents the CAE design methodology that was developed to combine topology and shape optimization with 3d printing manufacturing. Novel developments both in shape and topology optimization have also been realized for the specific character of these components. The design methodology is illustrated with several applications of components of our new Eco Marathon prototype. They include a support for electric traction motors and different torque arms of the steering mechanism to be implemented in the new 2017 vehicle. The presentation is going to show the different design steps from the specifications and the formulation of the design problem to the 3D-printing of the parts: the topology optimization, interpretation and CAD reconstruction, shape optimization and detailed finite element verification of the solution. The optimization is performed thanks to the commercial software NX-TOPOL and the final CAD design is reconstructed in the CATIA environment software after a smoothing procedure in the NX-CAD environment. We show that the final design can be 3D-printed and a comparison with a design produced using traditional design approach is provided. [less ▲]

A stochastic 3-scale approach is developed in order to predict the probabilistic behavior of micro-resonators made of polycrystalline materials. In this method, stochastic volume elements (SVEs) [1] are defined from Voronoï tessellations using experimental measurements of the grain size, orientation, and surface roughness [2]. For each SVE realization, the mesoscopic apparent thermo-elastic properties such as elasticity tensor, thermal conductivity tensor, and thermal dilatation tensor are extracted using a coupled homogenization theory [3, 4]. A stochastic model is then built from the homogenized properties extracted from Voronoï tessellations using a moving window technique in order to generate spatially correlated meso-scale random fields. These random fields are then used as input for stochastic finite element simulations. As a result, the probabilistic distribution of micro-resonator properties can be extracted. The applications are two-fold: either a stochastic thermo-elastic homogenization is coupled to thermo-elastic 3D models of the micro-resonator in order to extract the probabilistic distribution of the Quality factor of the micro-resonators [5], or a stochastic second-order mechanical homogenization is coupled to a plate model of the micro-resonator in order to extract the effect of the uncertainties related to the surface roughness of the polycrystalline structures [1]. With the increasing use of engineered and/or heterogeneous materials, there is a need to develop multi-scale methods in order to predict with accuracy structural behaviors. One computationally efficient multi-scale method is the mean-field homogenization (MFH) one, which considers as homogenized strain and stress fields the volume average of their respective counterparts in the different composite material phases. Although originally developed for elastic materials, MFH methods have been extended to non-linear behaviors by considering a linear comparison composite (LCC). To define this LCC, the authors have developed an incremental-secant mean-field homogenization formulation, for which the residual stress and strain states reached in the phases upon a fictitious elastic unloading are considered as starting point to apply the secant method [1, 2]. The mean stress fields in the phases are then computed using isotropic secant tensors, which are naturally used to define the LCC. The incremental-secant formulation has several advantages: it can handle non-radial loading conditions, it avoids the isotropisation step required by other incremental methods, and it can handle softening behaviors in an accurate way. In this work, we present an extension of the incremental-secant mean-field homogenization to elasto-visco-plastic composite materials. The formulation can account for both first and second statistical moment estimates during the evaluation of the visco-plastic flow. The method predictions are compared to finite element (FE), to Fast-Fourier-Transform (FFT), and to experimental results, to demonstrate the accuracy of the method. This corpus study focuses on transitive structures that contain generic/indefinite O-arguments in Present-day English, cf. (1) featuring things and (2) featuring folks, and investigates to what extent these show reduced transitivity and backgrounded discourse status in the sense of Hopper and Thompson (1980). As can be observed in (1) and (2), the constructions studied show a high degree of transitivity on most of the transitivity parameters proposed in Hopper and Thompson (1980), apart from the individuation of the O-argument. For example, (1) and (2), score high in terms of kinesis, volitionality, agency and affirmation, but their O-arguments have generic reference. In addition, the constructions examined generally form part of backgrounded discourse. In (1) and (2), rather than pushing the story-line further, the structures render descriptions of a person’s character and behaviour that make them eligible for a specific task or job. (USbooks) More generally, the data suggest that in the constructions studied, the noun phrases coding O-participants merely function as filler elements, used to satisfy the argument-structure requirements imposed by the verb. In view of them realizing non-individuated O-arguments in backgrounded stretches of discourse, we propose that the structures focused on could be analysed as emergent (Hopper 1991) antipassive constructions, which won’t necessarily develop into canonical antipassive constructions over time. In fact, there is a good chance that they will never shed overt expression of the (original) O-argument. In addition to things and folks, this study examines the nouns people, stuff and shit(s) in the role of O-participant, thus factoring in an animacy variable (animate people, folks versus inanimate things, stuff and shit(s)), as well as a register variable (neutral people, things versus informal to slang folks, stuff, and shit(s)). Specifically, the queries used allowed for up to two intervening words between any verb form and the noun studied; for each noun 250 relevant examples were analysed, drawn from random samples from the US subcorpora of WordBanksOnline. Le Good Lives Model (GLM) s’attèle au développement et à l’amélioration du bien-être et d’une identité personnelle positive en tenant compte des caractéristiques de l’environne- ment. Il s’agit notamment de guider l'individu dans l’élaboration d’un plan de vie en prenant en compte ses besoins humains fondamentaux ainsi que les ressources et compétences nécessaires pour y arriver. Le G.L.M. va donc inciter l’acquisition de ressources et la réduc- tion de la récidive, en tant que celle-ci constitue un obstacle au bien-être et à l’accomplisse- ment personnel. Plus spécifiquement, le G.L.M. est efficace pour surmonter certaines limites inhé- rentes aux approches traditionnelles grâce, notamment, au soutien du processus de désis- tance, fruit d’interactions complexes entre des facteurs subjectifs, environnementaux et sociaux, et à l’amélioration de la disposition/accessibilité au traitement qui renvoie à la présence de caractéristiques (états et dispositions) dans le chef de l’usager, mais aussi de la situation thérapeutique. Il est donc de la responsabilité des intervenants d’adapter leurs traitements aux besoins des usagers plutôt que d’exiger des usagers qu’ils adaptent leurs besoins aux compétences limitées des intervenants. La violence cybernétique dans les couples d’adolescents est une forme de violence recourant aux nouvelles technologies pouvant comprendre deux versants, l’un d’agression (impliquant par exemple des insultes, humiliations et menaces en ligne vis-à-vis du partenaire) et l’autre de contrôle (impliquant la surveillance en ligne des activités en ligne et hors-ligne du partenaire). Dans le cadre de cette communication, c’est la pratique de sexting, les dynamiques relationnelles et les risques s’y rapportant qui seront abordés à partir d’une part des données d’une enquête menée auprès d’une population d’adolescents et d’autre part, de présentations de vignettes cliniques. La pratique de sexting lors de l’adolescence et le début de l’âge adulte jouerait un rôle dans l’expression de la sexualité et le recours aux textos et sextos serait relativement répandu tant chez les garçons que chez les filles. Il peut dès lors s’inscrire en tant que modalités d’interactions relationnelles et sexuelles négociées passant par la voie de l’image mettant en lumière l’ambiguité de « la proximité et de l’intimité à distance ». Il a cependant été montré que le sexting peut être associé à des conduites à risques et du harcèlement sexuel. Au terme de la présentation, nous envisagerons comment construire la prévention et les interventions par rapport à ces nouvelles formes de dynamiques relationnelles et de violences sexuelles.
