A new body of research has recently emerged in energy systems, focusing on the links between centralized and decentralized power generation, and on the interactions between different energy sectors. This research has brought new concepts such as « Smart Energy Systems », « 4th Generation district heating » or « Virtual Power plants ». In smart energy systems, the focus is on the integration of the electricity, heating, cooling, and transport sectors, and on the use of the flexibility in demands and various short-term and longer-term storage. This kind of interactions should be modeled with dedicated tools, such as Dispa-SET, an open-source unit commitment and optimal dispatch model that covers multiple energy sectors such as power, heating & cooling, transportation etc. In this lecture, Dispa-SET is used to evaluate the impact of sector coupling in a future European energy system with high shares of renewable energy together with highly flexible and storage technologies. Results show that the contributions of individual technologies are quite diverse, but also that the combination of multiple flexibility options such as long-term hydro, short-term electric vehicles and flexible thermal is a good solution in terms CO2 emissions and system operational costs. Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) has been utilized in the offshore industry, but it is rarely applied for inland navigation lock gates. This research presents a framework where Dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) is used for risk-based inspection planning of a miter gate considering inspection data. The study incorporates two sets of heuristic decision rules: inspections performed at regular time intervals and inspections performed when a certain annual probability failure threshold is reached. Consciousness is seemingly lost and recovered every day, from the moment we fall asleep until we wake up. Although these departures from wakefulness bring about different changes in brain function, behavior, and neurochemistry, they all lead to lack of reported subjective experience. Here, I will show how ongoing brain activity has been characterized in different states of unconsciousness, such as pharmacologically-induced anesthesia in humans and in noncommunicating states after severe brain injury. By and large, these investigations indicate that during unconscious states cortical long-range correlations are disrupted in both space and time, anticorrelated cortical interactions disappear, and that temporal dynamics are limited to describe specific patterns which are dominated by rigid functional configurations tied to the anatomical connectivity [less ▲]

Complex algae form a network of photosynthetic organisms spread across the eukaryotic tree. Among those, CASH lineages have plastids related to red algae, but the mechanisms by which they were acquired remain unclear. Contrary to expectations of secondary endosymbiotic models, a sizable part of their plastid-targeted genes is not from the same origin as the plastid itself. Scenarios as the ancestral cryptic serial endosymbioses or the shopping bag model provide a substantial interpretation of this gene mosaicism but are exclusively focusing on an endosymbiotic mechanism. Similarly, while the Rhodoplex hypothesis fits the single phylogenetic origin of complex red plastids, it does not explain gene mosaicism. Moreover, it implies multiple tertiary (or quaternary) endosymbiotic events, whereas most complex algae do not bear nucleomorphs and only have 3 or 4 membranes surrounding their plastids. To overcome the inconsistencies of those models, we propose kleptoplasty as an additional mechanism for explaining plastid spread in CASH lineages. In line with the shopping bag model, our hypothesis posits multiple transient interactions with preys of diverse origins but also proposes a rationale for the selective force driving the progressive accumulation of plastid-targeted genes: to maintain functional kleptoplastids for increasingly longer periods of time, before ultimately reducing them into fully integrated plastids. In such a scenario, the phylogenetic diversity of plastid-targeted genes would be higher than predicted with endosymbiotic models, where genes originate mostly from a single source, the algal symbiont. To test our hypothesis, we designed and implemented an automated pipeline for building and parsing gene trees in a discovery-driven and taxonomy-aware fashion. This approach allows us to infer whether any given CASH alga rather arose through endosymbiosis or kleptoplasty by reading its position on an alpha-diversity ladder, ranging from (theoretically) single-source nucleomorph-bearing organisms (e.g., Guillardia theta) to multiple-source kleptoplastic organisms (e.g., Dinophysis acuminata). As part of the Citizenship Day organized by the Athénée Royal de Malmedy, a workshop on the long-term management of nuclear waste has been offered to rhetoric students. This presentation is meant to be educational and as entertaining as possible. It aims to show how a problem as wide as the management of radioactive waste is treated from an engineering point of view. Before managing anything, the concepts involved, namely the radioactivity, the production of nuclear energy and the nuclear waste need to be understood and are therefore widely introduced. Then, the engineer has to choose the most effective management option by analyzing all the criteria that have an impact on it. Finally, the deep geological solution that is currently prevalent, has been developed. [less ▲]

Most of the information we gather about the Universe emanates from the stellar light. A good understanding of stars is therefore needed to, for instance, trace back the evolution of our Galaxy or of exoplanetary systems. In the last decades, the launch of the space-borne missions CoRoT (2006-2014) and Kepler (2009-2018) enabled a revolution in stellar physics. They provided us with photometric information on thousands of stars with an unprecedented quality. The amount and precision of the data allowed a direct probing of the internal properties of stars through the study of their oscillations, or asteroseismology. This additional piece of information leads to stringent constraints on stellar evolution that were not accessible with ‘classical’ techniques. In this talk, I will present my work about the study of acoustic glitches in main-sequence stars. Acoustic glitches represent the small signature in the oscillation frequency pattern resulting from sharp gradients in the stellar structure. Those glitches are essential to our understanding of stellar structure and evolution as, for example, they provide information about the surface helium content in low-mass stars or on the extent of the mixed regions, inaccessible by other means. In order to analyse such signatures and provide significant inferences, methods as precise and accurate as possible are necessary. However, previous works interested in the information carried by acoustic glitches focused only on those signatures and neglected information contained in the oscillation spectrum as a whole. The resulting parameters characterising the stellar structure were correlated with rather important error-bars. Thus, in this presentation, I will introduce a new stellar seismic probing method that we developed, called WhoSGlAd (Whole Spectrum and Glitches Adjustement) which analyses in a comprehensive way stellar oscillation spectra. This leads to smaller error-bars and thus stricter constraints. Our method is precise and fast, and may be used with any minimisation scheme to find best fit models representing seismic data. This provides precise inferences about their structure and access to the surface helium content. As the TESS mission has been launched and PLATO will follow, providing methods able to fully benefit from the wealth of exquisite quality data while reducing at most the uncertainties of the inferences is in order. Therefore, WhoSGlAd should reveal to be of great help in characterising the targets of both missions. [less ▲]

Machine learning approaches are heavily used to produce models that will one day support clinical decisions. To be reliably used asa medical decision, such diagnosis and prognosis tools have to harbor a high-level of precision. Random Forests have been already used in cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and screening. Numerous Random Forests methods have been derived from the original random forest algorithm. Nevertheless, the precision of their generated models remains unknown when facing biological data. The precision of such models can be therefore too variable to produce models with the same accuracy of classification, making them useless in daily clinics. Here, we perform an empirical comparison of Random Forest based strategies, looking for their precision in model accuracy and overall computational time. An assessment of 15 methods is carried out for the classification of paired normal-tumor patients, from 3 TCGA RNA-Seq datasets: BRCA (Breast Invasive Carcinoma), LUSC (Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma), and THCA (Thyroid Carcinoma). Results demonstrate noteworthy differences in the precision of the model accuracy and the overall time processing, between the strategies for one dataset, as well as between datasets for one strategy. Therefore, we highly recommend to test several random forest strategies prior to modeling. This will certainly improve the precision in model accuracy while revealing the method of choice for the candidate data. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Control of molecular reactivity can be achieved using intense few-cycle pulses. Few-cycle ultrashort IR pulses allow excitation of coherently coupled electronic states, opening new ways for steering nuclear motions in molecules. We compute the coupled dynamics of electrons and nuclei of the LiH molecule by numerically integrating the Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation (TDSE). The molecular Hamiltonian includes both the non-adiabatic coupling and the dipole coupling with the external electric field associated to a moderately strong IR pulse with a definite phase between its envelope and carrier oscillation. We also include the coupling between the electronic states of the neutral molecule and the ionization continuum in the dipole approximation, enabling us to fully account for the multi-photon excitation and ionization. During this seminar, we will discuss how these two processes interact and shape the ensuing coupled electronic-nuclear dynamics in both the neutral excited electronic states and the cationic states of the diatomic molecule. The TDSE is integrated at nuclear grid points using the partitioning technique with a subspace of ten coupled bound states and a subspace of discretized continuous states for the photoionization continua. We show that the coherent dynamics in the neutral subspace is strongly affected by the amplitude exchanges with the ionization continua during the pulse, as well as by the onset of nuclear motion. The coupling to the cation and the resulting ionization does not preclude the control of the motion in the neutral through control of the carrier-envelope phase. Our methodology provides not only a visualization in space and in time of the entangled vibronic wave packet in the neutral states but also of the wave packet of the outgoing photoelectron. Thereby we can follow spatially and temporally the dynamics of the outgoing and bound electrons during the pulse and the nuclear motion in the bound subspace while moving through non adiabatic coupling regions after the pulse. We also show that the dynamics ensuing the excitation can be probed over time using a XUV attosecond probe pulse with varying pump-probe delays. The probing by such a pulse allows both following the evolution of the out of equilibrium electron density built by the pump pulse through analysis of the Velocity Map Imaging (VMI), and the evolution of the nuclear wave packet by recording the transient absorption spectra.
