The use of stable isotopes as ecological tracers in deep-sea ecosystems has a long history, dating back to the late 1970’s. Stable isotopes have been instrumental to many key-findings about ecosystem functioning, particularly in chemosynthesis-based habitats (hydrothermal vents, cold seeps). However, constraining sampling logistics commonly limit the scope, extent, and therefore insights drawn from isotope-based deep-sea studies. Overall, much is left to discover about factors globally influencing food web structure in deep-sea ecosystems. In this context, deep-sea ecologists have to ensure that no sample is left unexploited, and that all generated data are easily discoverable, available and reusable. DeepIso is a collaborative effort to produce a global compilation of stable isotope ratios and elemental contents in organisms from deep-sea ecosystems. In doing so, it aims to provide the deep-sea community with an open data analysis tool that can be used in the context of future ecological research, and to help deep-sea researchers to use stable isotope markers at their full efficiency. More info about the project can be found at https://loicnmichel.com/deepiso/ As of v1 (2020/10/22), the database contains 15 distinct datasets, for a total of 18677 fully documented measurements. Archived parameters currently include δ13C (n = 4587), δ15N (n = 4388), δ34S (n = 951), %C (n = 2740), %N (n = 2741), %S (n = 752) and C/N ratio (n = 2518). Those measurements pertain to 4378 distinct samples belonging to 493 taxa, plus sediments, suspended particulate organic matter, plankton and detritus. Samples were taken between 1989 and 2018 in multiple environments (hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, cold water coral reefs, and other benthic or pelagic environments) and at depths ranging up to 5209 meters. The database consists of three files: one containing the data itself, one describing all used terms (measurements or metadata, derived from Darwin Core standards, https://dwc.tdwg.org/terms/), and a changelog detailing changes made between successive versions. Aim. In tropical Africa, savannas cover huge areas, have high plant species richness, and are considered as a major natural resource for most countries. There is, however, little information available on their floristics and biogeography at the continental scale, despite the importance of such information for our understanding of the drivers of species diversity at various scales and for effective conservation and management. Here, we collated and analysed floristic data from across the continent in order to propose a biogeographic regionalization for African savannas. Location. We collated floristic information (specifically woody species lists) for 298 samples of savanna vegetation across Africa, extending from 18°N to 33°S and from 17°W to 48°E. Taxon. We focused on native woody species. Methods. We used ordination and clustering to identify the floristic discontinuities and gradual transitions across African savannas. Floristic relationships, specificity and turnover, within and between floristic clusters, were analysed using a (dis-)similarity-based approach. Results. We identified eight floristic clusters across African savannas which in turn were grouped into two larger macro-units. Ordinations at species and genus levels showed a clear differentiation in woody species composition between the North/West macro-unit and the South/East macro-unit. This floristic discontinuity matches to the High (i.e., N&W) and Low (S&E) division of Africa previously proposed by White (1983) and which tracks climatic and topographic variation. In the N&W savannas, the floristic gradient determined by rainfall was partitioned into the Sudanian (drier) and Guinean (wetter) clusters. Within the highly heterogeneous S&E savannas and woodlands, six clusters were identified: Ugandan, Ethiopian, Mozambican, Zambezian, Namibian and South-African. Main conclusions. The proposed pan-African classification of savannas and woodlands might assist the development of coordinated management and conservation policies. [less ▲]

The Gaia GraL catalogue of clusters consist of 2,058,962 clusters with three components and 70,697 clusters with four components. Each of these clusters satisfied the following conditions: i) Clusters are composed of three or four images in order to provide a sufficient number of constraints for identifying gravitational lens candidates. ii) Their constituent images have negligible parallaxes, plx, and proper motions, (pmra', pmdec) where pmra' = pmra * cos(dec). Specifically, we required that plx-3*e_plx<4mas and abs(pm)-3*e[SUB]pm<4mas (where e[/SUB]X is the mean error on X and pm stands for pmra' and pmdec). iii) The maximal angular separation between any pair of images is below or equal to 6 arcsec. iv) The absolute difference in G magnitude between components is lower or equal to 4mag. v) Clusters are located in regions with a mean field density lower than 60000 objects/deg[SUP]2[/SUP]. The mean density of objects is computed within a radius of 30 arcsec around each cluster. Based on a supervised learning method, called extremely randomized trees (ERT), each cluster is assigned a discriminant value: the ERT probability. This ERT probability reflects the ability of the clusters to be matched to the image positions and relative magnitudes produced from simulations of lens systems based on a non-singular isothermal ellipsoid lens model (Kormann+, 1994) in the presence of an external shear (Kovner, 1987). These probabilities do not constitute probabilities in a mathematical sense, although they can be translated into expected ratios of identification of gravitational lenses (the true positive rate, TPR) and to expected ratios of misclassification of groups of stars as gravitational lenses (the false positive rate, FPR) through the use of an appropriate cross-validation procedure (see the description of the roc*.dat files). As we expect some of the lensed images to be missing from Gaia DR2, all combinations of three and four images were considered fo building the ERT. The resulting ERT models wil be referred to as ABCD, ABC, ABD, ACD and BCD where A, B, C, D identify the images we used for building the corresponding ERT model, assuming these are sorted in ascending order of G magnitude. Finally, the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves from files roc.dat, rocabc.dat, rocabd.dat, rocacd.dat, and rocbcd.dat are obtained by computing the TPR and FPR that are associated with all ERT probabilities coming from the corresponding ERT model based on a test set and a validation set of observations. The test set of observations (TS) is composed of 5*10[SUP]7[/SUP] gravitational lenses simulated from a non-singular isothermal ellipsoid lens model in the presence of an external shear and of the same number of simulated contaminants where the relative image positions and fluxes are randomly drawn from a uniform distribution. The validation set of observations (VS) is composed of 12 known lensed systems having four detections in Gaia DR2 (2MASSJ11344050-2103230, J1606-2333, WGD2038-4008, HE0435-1223, SDSS1004+4112, PG1115+080, B1422+231, 2MASXJ01471020+4630433, 2MASSJ13102005-1714579, J1721+8842, WFI2033-4723 and RXJ1131-1231) and of 1e6 clusters we randomly extracted from Gaia DR2 with a size smaller than 30 arcsec and a maximal absolute difference in G magnitude between their constituent images <4mag. The transformation of Romanesco from a Southern language to become one that is much closer to the Tuscan varieties has no equivalent in the history of the Italian languages, from the beginning of the vernacular era to the present day. The uniqueness of the ‘Rome case’ has been stressed in many circumstances, and several explanations have been proposed for it, but no agreement has been reached yet. Almost one century ago, Migliorini (1932:113) proposed a theory, according to which ‘the history of Romanesco is the history of its decay.’ Interestingly, to this day, there is no consensus about when exactly, how, and with what consequences, the ‘decay’ of the Roman language took place. Indeed, more than fifty years after Migliorini’s work, Mancini (1987:41) argued that, until then, scholars ‘placed too much emphasis on some demographically macroscopic events,’ such as the Sack of Rome in 1527. Instead, according to him, the mutation of Romanesco was a slow event, already in place, at least in its germinal stages, in the Quattrocento. Pietro Trifone (1990:92) quickly reacted with a detailed linguistic analysis of new documents, and concluded that the demographic de-southernisation of Rome (caused by the Sack) and the ensuing repopulation of the city post-1527 were the main reasons for the de-southernisation of the spoken language of the lowest social classes. The debate between specialists has continued for several years. At the present time, rather than choose sides, scholars tend to report both opinions and try to harmonise them into a whole. Currently, and maybe because no one has established a definitive answer to the issue, researchers seem to prefer to focus on the Romanesco spoken in the present day, a language that has still many points of contact with its Renaissance variety. With the aim of promoting new studies on this topic, the database offers scholars the opportunity to explore the whole corpus of texts written in Romanesco from the 9th to the 16th century. Regularly updated, it will make available as much metadata as possible concerning texts written in the language of Rome from its origins to 1550, and the physical objects (manuscripts, printed books or places, such as churches or catacombs) that convey them. The SOLAR/SOLSPEC space-based instrument has measured the solar spectral irradiance from 165 to 3000nm at 0.6 to 9.5nm spectral resolution during the almost nine years of the SO- LAR/ISS mission. The instrument was calibrated using the PTB standard blackbody developed for temperatures up to 3200K. The absolute accuracy, based on a detailed analysis of error sources, indicates a mean absolute uncertainty of 1.26% of the total solar irradiance in the 165-3000nm range. Using SOLAR/SOLSPEC data, a new solar spectrum (SOLAR-ISS) covering the 165-3000nm wavelength range is built with added high spectral resolution. This SOLAR-ISS spectrum is developed by combining high spectral resolution from reference solar spectra with the resulting SOLAR/SOLSPEC spectrum through the knowledge of the slit functions of the SOLAR/SOLSPEC instrument. <P />(1 data file). <P /> [less ▲]

To access the input data form, for the purpose of adding documents, use this link: http://j.tinyurl.com/P4-Library To avoid duplication of data entries, it is necessary to review and perform an audit. In the beginning, we will provide this tutorial to a few data entry collaborators. To become a data entry collaborator, please send an e-mail to the following address: quaternaryprevention@gmail.com Charts are available in eight languages to code with Q-Codes: http://3cgp.docpatient.net/tabular/ [less ▲]

The subject of this work is to solve the problem of packing a set of shipments (various cuboid boxes) into containers of various shapes without wasting loading space. All the boxes have to be loaded and few are identical. As it is the case for all the packing problems, the packing has to satisfy geometry constraints: the items cannot overlap and have to lie entirely inside the bins. The richness of our application is to manage additional and common constraints: the bin weight capacity, the rotations of the boxes, the stability and the fragility of the boxes and the uniformity of the weight distribution inside the ULDs. The last constraint is crucial in air transportation: when ULDs are packed inside the airplane, the centre of gravity is computed assuming each ULD has a centre of gravity close to the geometrical centre of its basis. This type of constraints can be adapted to road transportation for the axle weight limits, which plays a key role since the weigh-in-motion systems become more common. [less ▲]

The collection contains 222 inscriptions belonging to the category of so-called “sacred laws”, for which we have preferred the designation “ritual norms” (on this subject, see the programmatic introductory article found here: http://kernos.revues.org/2115). The texts included in the collection thus far concern the themes of sacrifice and purification. Each inscription is presented in an up-to-date published edition (occasionally, a new edition is offered), with information about its context, essential bibliography, French and English translations, and a detailed commentary. All of the files have been encoded in TEI-XML Epidoc, are fully searchable, and may be used and downloaded in Open Access. The project behind the development of the CGRN, financed by the Fonds pour la recherche scientifique (F.R.S.-FNRS, Belgium) at University of Liège, is still ongoing. Updates to the website will be made on an annual basis. Additionally, a print-on-demand edition will soon become available on the website. Background The seagrass Posidonia oceanica L. Delile, commonly known as Neptune grass, is an endemic species of the Mediterranean Sea. It hosts a distinctive and diverse epiphytic community, dominated by various macroalgal and animal organisms. Mediterranean bryozoans have been extensively studied but quantitative data assessing temporal and spatial variability have rarely been documented. In Lepoint et al. (2014a, b) occurrence and abundance data of epiphytic bryozoan communities on leaves of P. oceanica inhabiting the Revellata Bay (Corsica, Mediterranean Sea) were reported and trophic ecology of Electra posidoniae Gautier assessed. New information Here, we provide metadata information on data set discussed in Lepoint et al. 2014a and published on the GBIF portal as a sampling-event data set: http://ipt.biodiversity.be/resource?r=ulg_bryozoa&v=1.0). For several centuries, the literature of artists’ recipe books has been considered one of the most original and comprehensive primary sources for the historical study of artistic practices and materials. In addition to the famous Libro dell’arte of Cennino Cennini, nearly five hundred European manuscripts containing artistic recipes survive from before circa 1550. A great number of these are still unpublished and virtually unknown. Our work on a large corpus of recipe collections has generated the material for a database that facilitates consultation and exploitation of the source material.Current structure of the database The core data consists of mediaeval and pre-modern manuscripts and printed books from Northern and Southern Europe. The various layouts of the ‘Colour ConText’ database allow access to the metadata of the sources with details such as title, current location, place and date of origin, scribes or authors, previous owners, and description of any other (non-recipe) content. The database also allows access to digital images of these sources via European Cultural Heritage Online (ECHO) or via digital collections made available by external institutes, and to the transcription and translation of the recipe texts. Reference to primary and secondary sources, together with the related bibliographical data, is integrated throughout the database. To date, over 400 manuscripts have been considered and 4,500 recipes - some constituting only a few lines, others covering several folios - have been transcribed and recorded within the database. The database also includes a complete index of the ‘simples’ (substances mentioned as ingredients). Thus materials are indexed both by their current scientific name and by the terms exactly as they appear in the source texts. Each ingredient’s appellation is linked by relational tables to its contemporary and modern synonyms. This allows the retrieval of all the different appellations used for one ingredient – detailing the historical written context – but also the various ingredients that may be related to one ‘appellation’. A survey of artistic materials and techniques The database helps not only to observe the global frequency and recurrence of each ingredient and technical instruction, but also to deduce the availability of artistic material within a chronologically and geographically defined area. Many of these recipes can be used to identify specific, datable practices and materials, as compilers often specify the name and/or place of origin of the artists from whom they obtained their information. Information related to the historical provenance of the source material (obtained through codicological or philological analysis) has also been recorded within the database and may be used for that purpose. Moreover, it is possible to observe, through factors such as frequency within the corpus, basic structure, and evolution, how recipes were modified over time or by other external phenomena. It is also possible to link the development of specific artistic procedures and technical traditions, and to correlate these with more widely diffused techniques. Thus, recipe books allow us to study the geography, chronology, circulation and dissemination of artists’ knowledge. Colour material and terminology This project notably aims at considering and evaluating the importance and interest accorded to knowledge of the materials and substances used by artists and shared with other professionals (such as apothecaries), focusing on pigments and colouring material. For that purpose, other written sources related to colour will be included (notably texts on colour theory, on colour symbolism, on colour systems, on the pharmaceutical qualities of colours, etc.). In parallel to the physical descriptions of pigments and colourants, these written sources deliver information concerning their optical characteristics, conservation, (in)compatibility with other sorts of materials and their ageing properties. The diversity of colour denominations and the complexity of the varied technical terminology will be made transparent through a glossary of all the substances, ingredients, and their synonyms mentioned in the recipe books. Transmission of artists’ knowledge Such collections of recipes were often gathered in the same book with other subjects (such as theology, alchemy, botany or medicine) and these are also described within the database. The database also includes information concerning the provenance and circulation of these books outside the workshop. This allows other questions to be addressed - notably those related to the ownership and readership of collections of recipes. [less ▲]

Light curves of four transits of the extrasolar planetary system WASP-2 are presented, obtained with substantial telescope defocussing in order to improve the photometric precision of the observations. Three of the datasets were obtained using the Danish 1.5m telescope, DFOSC camera and R filter at ESO La Silla in 2010. One of these datasets was affected by cloud, so was not included in our analysis but is archived with the rest of the data in case it is useful to others. The fourth dataset was obtained with the Loiano 1.52m telescope, BFOSC camera and a Gunn r filter. We also include a datafile containing the times of transit midpoint from our own data and from other sources. [less ▲]
