Thiamine (vitamin B1) is an essential molecule for all living organisms. It is the precursor for several phosphorylated derivatives, the most important being the coenzyme thiamine diphosphate (ThDP). Thiamine is transported into cells by specific transporters and pyrophosphorylated to ThDP in the cytosol. ThDP is an essential cofactor for cellular oxidative energy metabolism. Thiamine deficiency disorders lead to severe nervous system lesion and cardiac failure. ThDP is the precursor for two triphosphorylated derivatives, thiamine triphosphate and adenosine thiamine triphosphate, with unknown function but present in all three kingdoms of life. [less ▲]

Giulio Castellani was an Italian nobleman, Aristotelian scholar, and clergyman born in Faenza, Italy, who is mostly known for his Adversus M. Tullii Ciceronis academicas quaestiones disputatio (1558) where Castellani defended dogmatic Aristotelianism against Cicero’s Academica and Skepticism in general as exposed by the influential humanist Francesco Pico della Mirandola. Castellani also published a book entitled De humano intellectu libri III in Bologne in 1561, where he gave an important contribution to the controversy on the immortality of the soul raised by Pomponazzi and Averroism. In this book, Castellani favors Alexandrist positions against the trend of Simplician Averroism defended by the Paduan scholar Marcantonio Genua. As a professor, Giulio Castellani taught at the Academia degl’Invaghiti in Mantua where he lectured on Aristotle’s Ethics at the beginning of the 1560s. At the end of his life, he received the chair of philosophy at the Sapienza University in Rome. Castellani also developed an important career in Italian religious institutions. Named Canon of the Cathedral of Faenza by Pope Pie V in 1571, he was later appointed Bishop of Cariati (Calabria) by Pope Sixtus V, but he died in October 1586 just before being consecrated. As a central dimension of the Human experience, the conception of time has undergone deep transformations during the Renaissance period, in relationship with global evolutions in European arts, sciences, and metaphysics. The Aristotelian definition of time as “a number of motion in respect to before and after” was challenged to open the way to an ontological determination of time, independent from motion and connected to the divine structure of beings in the universe. From Ficino to most innovative thinkers like Telesio, Patrizi. Bruno in particular introduced a relativistic perspective and showed that we should rather speak of a multiplicity of times. The reflection on the difference between time and duration has been another technical issue developed by Renaissance thinkers: since time was no more referred to the Ptolemaic cosmos, the concept of duration was used to designate the internal time of things and existing beings, as Suarez makes clear at the beginning of seventeenth century. This idea of time as an inner reality also had important applications in the field of literature and moral philosophy, as we see for instance in Shakespeare and Montaigne. Although Modern Philosophers like Descartes or Pascal seem to break with the scholastic approach of time, it is interesting to note that the pre-Newtonian concept of “absolute time” is rooted in Renaissance theories of time and the development of Copernicanism leading to the construction of a new reference frame, where the Suarezian “imaginary time” plays a central role. The 19th century was a century represented by its actors as one of irreversible progress – one that the advance of the sciences was driving towards an increasingly developed future. In this future, it was thought, knowledge would allow man to emancipate himself once and for all; he would be freed from the heaviest and most punishing tasks, which would be carried out by machines and other new technologies. The control of fossil fuels allowed for the invention of the train, and electricity appeared, as did photography and the telegraph. Medicine progressed. Scientific research permitted an increasing number of illnesses to be cured and treated through, for example, the first vaccines, which were enabled by Pasteur’s discoveries. Amid this effervescence, science found itself placed at the centre of all scholarly thought, ripe for theorisation. The advances of chemistry, physics and biology fascinated those who Honneth has rightly called philosophers of the social (1994). And at the time, more than one of these philosophers envisaged the application of natural science’s methods to the study of human societies. The idea that it is possible to identify the principal natural laws that govern the development of human groups – just like it is possible to identify the laws that govern the physical world (in order to control it) – gained ground. Saint-Simon (1760-1825), envisaged a social physiology whose task would be to observe social phenomena as we observe natural phenomena. But it was Auguste Comte (1798-1857) who, theorising what we still understand today as sociology, would endorse the particular stand of social philosophy that constituted positivism. [less ▲]
