Wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) are common polyphagous soil pests of various crops, including maize and potatoes, inflicting severe economic damage (Parker and Howard 2001). Their management with pesticides is often not successful or sustainable and more research on biological alternatives is required. One of these alternatives could be the use of traps baited with attractive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in association with a microbial control agent. In this paper, we describe the methodology followed to identify volatile organic molecules with potential as wireworms attractants. We previously observed that cut potato tubers place on the soil surface were highly attractive for wireworms. To identify the attractive cues released by potato tubers, we defined three specific objectives: 1) developing a behavioral assay suitable for the study of wireworm orientation behavior; 2) profiling VOCs released by potato tubers; 3) evaluating the role of the identified VOCs on wireworms foraging behavior. An unprecedented level of control for the radical polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), yielding well-defined PVDF (up to 14,500 g/mol) with low dispersity (≤1.32), was achieved using organometallic mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) with an organocobalt compound as initiator. The high chain-end fidelity was demonstrated by the synthesis of PVDF- and PVAc-containing di-and tri-block copolymers. DFT calculations rationalize the efficient reactivation of both head and tail chain end dormant species. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The quest for other habitable worlds and the search for life among them are major goals of modern astronomy. One way to make progress towards these goals is to obtain high-quality spectra of a large number of exoplanets over a broad range of wavelengths. While concepts currently investigated in the United States are focused on visible/NIR wavelengths, where the planets are probed in reflected light, a compelling alternative to characterize planetary atmospheres is the mid-infrared waveband (5-20um). Indeed, mid-infrared observations provide key information on the presence of an atmosphere, the surface conditions (e.g., temperature, pressure, habitability), and the atmospheric composition in important species such as H2O, CO2, O3, CH4, and N2O. This information is essential to investigate the potential habitability of exoplanets and to make progress towards the search for life in the universe. Obtaining high-quality mid-infrared spectra of exoplanets from the ground is however extremely challenging due to the overwhelming brightness and turbulence of Earth's atmosphere. In this paper, we present a concept of space-based mid-infrared interferometer that can tackle this observing challenge and discuss the main technological developments required to launch such a sophisticated instrument. We present a detailed quantitative magneto-optical imaging study of several superconductor/ ferromagnet hybrid structures, including Nb deposited on top of thermomagnetically patterned NdFeB, and permalloy/niobium with erasable and tailored magnetic landscapes imprinted in the permalloy layer. The magneto-optical imaging data is complemented with and compared to scanning Hall probe microscopy measurements. Comprehensive protocols have been developed for calibrating, testing, and converting Faraday rotation data to magnetic field maps. Applied to the acquired data, they reveal the comparatively weaker magnetic response of the superconductor from the background of larger fi elds and field gradients generated by the magnetic layer. Hierarchical porous N-doped carbon (NPC) is prepared by pyrolysis of poly(- methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles decorated by graphene oxide (GO) and polypyrrole (PPy) as precursors and used as anode for lithium-ion batteries. The composite precursors with different diameter and composition (PMMA/GO/ PPy-A and B) were conveniently prepared by dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of graphene oxide as stabilizer in aqueous medium, followed by addition of pyrrole and its oxidative polymerization. After pyrolysis, the resulting NPC composites with hierarchically structured macro- and mesopores exhibit high surface area (289–398 m2/g) and different N-doping levels (7.46 and 4.22 wt% of nitrogen content). The NPC with the highest N-doping level (7.46 wt%) shows high reversible capacities of 831 mAh/g at 74.4 mA/g (C/5) after 50 cycles and excellent rate performances. [less ▲]

The German Federal Constitutional Court judgment of June 21th 2016 is the last episode of a long saga in which the FCC and the CJEU have been opposed each other regarding the compliance with European Union Law of the European Central Bank (ECB)’s action during the sovereign debt crisis and, consequently, concerning the existence of a tacit constitutional mutation of the ECB's mandate. In its decision, the Federal Constitutional Court confirms the conformity of the ECB's monetary program (Outright Monetary Transactions) with EU law and German constitutional law, but maintains nevertheless some "serious objections" against the CJEU's position, thus nourishing the possibility – also perceptible in other EU Member States (France and Belgium in particular) – of an open confrontation between national constitutional courts and the CJEU.
