Molecular and morphological methods were applied to study cyanobacterial community composition in biological soil crusts (BSCs) from four areas (two nunataks and two ridges) in the Sør Rondane Mountains, Antarctica. The sampling sites serve as control areas for open top chambers (OTCs) which were placed in 2010 at the time of sample collection and will be compared with BSC samples taken from the OTCs in future. Cyanobacterial cell biovolume was estimated using epifluorescence microscopy, which revealed the dominance of filamentous cyanobacteria in all studied sites except the Utsteinen ridge, where unicellular cyanobacteria were the most abundant. Cyanobacterial diversity was studied by a combination of molecular fingerprinting methods based on the 16S rRNA gene (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and 454 pyrosequencing) using cyanobacteria specific primers. The number of DGGE sequences obtained per site was variable and, therefore, a high-throughput method was later employed to improve the diversity coverage. Consistent with previous surveys in Antarctica, both methods showed that filamentous cyanobacteria such as Leptolyngbya sp., Phormidium sp. and Microcoleus sp. were dominant in the studied sites. In addition, the studied localities differed in substrate type, climatic conditions and soil parameters, which likely resulted in differences in cyanobacterial community composition. Furthermore, the BSC growing on gneiss pebbles had lower cyanobacterial abundances than BSCs associated to granitic substrates. [less ▲]

This paper describes a robust and efficient method to obtain the steady-state, nonlinear behaviour of large arrays of electrically actuated micromembranes vibrating in a fluid. The nonlinear electromechanical behavior and the multiple vibration harmonics it creates are fully taken into account thanks to a multiharmonic finite element formulation, generated automatically using symbolic calculation. A domain decomposition method allows to consider large arrays of micromembranes by efficiently distributing the computational cost on parallel computers. Two- and three- dimensional examples highlight the main properties of the proposed method. [less ▲]

Based on the analysis of a clinical case, namely a borderline patient displaying several self-realised tattoos, we’ll broach three principal characteristics of borderline existence. They are instantaneity, ubiquity and a sense of disappearing-body. Given this original understanding of the trouble, the issue of tattoo practice in borderline people, as well as the very particular relationship they maintain with their own body and other people, will be discussed. We’ll also highlight the dialectics between the objectification of the body, as an object which is likely to be manipulated and modified, and the objectivation of the body, as an object dotted with the special and determining power of being animated by a subjectivity. We’ll end by emphasising how the borderline personality find its place and is, in a way, in tune with the postmodern evolution of our current society. [less ▲]

White-dwarf stars are the end product of stellar evolution for most stars in the Universe1. Their interiors bear the imprint of fundamental mechanisms that occur during stellar evolution2,3. Moreover, they are important chronometers for dating galactic stellar populations, and their mergers with other white dwarfs now appear to be responsible for producing the type Ia supernovae that are used as standard cosmological candles4. However, the internal structure of white-dwarf stars—in particular their oxygen content and the stratification of their cores—is still poorly known, because of remaining uncertainties in the physics involved in stellar modelling codes5,6. Here we report a measurement of the radial chemical stratification (of oxygen, carbon and helium) in the hydrogen- deficient white-dwarf star KIC08626021 (J192904.6+444708), independently of stellar-evolution calculations. We use archival data7,8 coupled with asteroseismic sounding techniques9,10 to determine the internal constitution of this star. We find that the oxygen content and extent of its core exceed the predictions of existing models of stellar evolution. The central homogeneous core has a mass of 0.45 solar masses, and is composed of about 86 per cent oxygen by mass. These values are respectively 40 per cent and 15 per cent greater than those expected from typical white-dwarf models. These findings challenge present theories of stellar evolution and their constitutive physics, and open up an avenue for calibrating white-dwarf cosmochronology11. [less ▲]

Dans la même missive, ce qui s’énonce d’abord comme un projet prométhéen (« Le poète est vraiment voleur de feu ») se résume en trois mots supposant davantage un engagement dans l’expérimentation : « Trouver une langue. » Au poète de tenter, d’éprouver, de faire bouger les cadres et de secouer les structures établies. We present a new asteroseismic modeling of the hot B subdwarf (sdB) pulsator PG 1219+534, based on a 3-month campaign with the Mont4K/Kuiper combination at Mt Bigelow (Arizona) and on updated atmospheric parameters from high S/N low and medium resolution spectroscopy. On the basis of the nine independent pulsation periods extracted from the photometric light curve, we carried out an astroseismic analysis by applying the forward modeling approach using our latest (third and fourth generation) sdB models. Atmospheric parameters (Teff = 34 258±170 K, log g = 5.838±0.030) were used as independent constraints, as well as partial mode identification based on observed multiplet structures we ascribed to stellar rotation. The optimal model found is remarkably consistent between various analyses with third and fourth generation of sdB models, and also with previously published analysis with second generation sdB models. It corresponds to a sdB with a canonical mass (0.46 ± 0.02 M⊙), rather thin H-He envelope (log q(envl)= −3.75 ± 0.12), and close to He-burning exhaustion (Xcore(C + O) = 0.86 ± 0.05). We also investigate the internal rotation of the star. We find that PG 1219+534 rotates very slowly (Prot=34.91 ± 0.84 days) and that solid-body rotation is reached at least down to ∼60% of the radius. [less ▲]

Objective: We here aimed at characterizing heart–brain interactions in patients with disorders of consciousness. We tested how this information impacts data-driven classification between unresponsive and minimally conscious patients. Methods: A cohort of 127 patients in vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS; n570) and minimally conscious state (MCS; n557) were presented with the local–global auditory oddball paradigm, which dis- tinguishes 2 levels of processing: short-term deviation of local auditory regularities and global long-term rule viola- tions. In addition to previously validated markers of consciousness extracted from electroencephalograms (EEG), we computed autonomic cardiac markers, such as heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV), and cardiac cycle phase shifts triggered by the processing of the auditory stimuli. Results: HR and HRV were similar in patients across groups. The cardiac cycle was not sensitive to the processing of local regularities in either the VS/UWS or MCS patients. In contrast, global regularities induced a phase shift of the cardiac cycle exclusively in the MCS group. The interval between the auditory stimulation and the following R peak was significantly shortened in MCS when the auditory rule was violated. When the information for the cardiac cycle modulations and other consciousness-related EEG markers were combined, single patient classification performance was enhanced compared to classification with solely EEG markers. Interpretation: Our work shows a link between residual cognitive processing and the modulation of autonomic somatic markers. These results open a new window to evaluate patients with disorders of consciousness via the embodied paradigm, according to which body–brain functions contribute to a holistic approach to conscious processing.
