This paper develops an in-situ methodology to help architects insure better inclusion of people with Down syndrome all along preliminary phases of the architectural design process, and eventually to the designed space. This methodology first offers architects some design keys in regard of how people with Down syndrome interact with two types of spaces: their personal dwellings and some completely unknown spaces. The methodology then unfolds towards more pro-active inclusion of the participants thanks to playful expression of their feelings and perceptions. This paper discusses how this methodology relates to inclusive and universal design principles as well as prevalent models of disability in architecture. [less ▲]

Objectives: (1) To investigate music theory teachers’ professional and extra-professional vocal loading and background noise exposure, (2) to determine the correlation between vocal loading and background noise, and (3) to determine the correlation between vocal loading and self-evaluation data. Methods: Using voice dosimetry, 13 music theory teachers were monitored for one workweek. Parameters analysed were voice SPL, F0, phonation time, vocal loading index (VLI) and noise SPL. Spearman’s correlation was used to correlate vocal loading parameters (voice SPL, F0 and phonation time) and noise SPL. Each day, subjects self-assessed their voice using visual analogue scales. VLI and self-evaluation data were correlated using Spearman’s correlation. Results: Vocal loading parameters and noise SPL were significantly higher in the professional than in the extra-professional environment. Voice SPL, phonation time and females’ F0 correlated positively with noise SPL. VLI correlated with self-assessed voice quality, vocal fatigue and amount of singing and speaking voice produced. Conclusions: Teaching music theory is a profession with high vocal demands. More background noise is associated with increased vocal loading and may indirectly increase the risk for voice disorders. Correlations between VLI and self-assessments suggest that these teachers are well-aware of their vocal demands and feel their effect on voice quality and vocal fatigue. Visual analogue scales seem to represent a useful tool for subjective vocal loading assessment and associated symptoms in these professional voice users. [less ▲]

This paper describes a robust and efficient method to obtain the steady-state, nonlinear behaviour of large arrays of electrically actuated micromembranes vibrating in a fluid. The nonlinear electromechanical behavior and the multiple vibration harmonics it creates are fully taken into account thanks to a multiharmonic finite element formulation, generated automatically using symbolic calculation. A domain decomposition method allows to consider large arrays of micromembranes by efficiently distributing the computational cost on parallel computers. Two- and three- dimensional examples highlight the main properties of the proposed method. [less ▲]

Based on the analysis of a clinical case, namely a borderline patient displaying several self-realised tattoos, we’ll broach three principal characteristics of borderline existence. They are instantaneity, ubiquity and a sense of disappearing-body. Given this original understanding of the trouble, the issue of tattoo practice in borderline people, as well as the very particular relationship they maintain with their own body and other people, will be discussed. We’ll also highlight the dialectics between the objectification of the body, as an object which is likely to be manipulated and modified, and the objectivation of the body, as an object dotted with the special and determining power of being animated by a subjectivity. We’ll end by emphasising how the borderline personality find its place and is, in a way, in tune with the postmodern evolution of our current society. [less ▲]

We propose a new method for automatic 3D multimodal registration based on anatomical landmark detection. Landmark detectors are learned independantly in the two imaging modalities using Extremely Randomized Trees and multi-resolution voxel windows. A least-squares fitting algorithm is then used for rigid registration based on the landmark positions as predicted by these detectors in the two imaging modalities. Experiments are carried out with this method on a dataset of pelvis CT and CBCT scans related to 45 patients. On this dataset, our fully automatic approach yields results very competitive with respect to a manually assisted state-of-the-art rigid registration algorithm. [less ▲]

White-dwarf stars are the end product of stellar evolution for most stars in the Universe1. Their interiors bear the imprint of fundamental mechanisms that occur during stellar evolution2,3. Moreover, they are important chronometers for dating galactic stellar populations, and their mergers with other white dwarfs now appear to be responsible for producing the type Ia supernovae that are used as standard cosmological candles4. However, the internal structure of white-dwarf stars—in particular their oxygen content and the stratification of their cores—is still poorly known, because of remaining uncertainties in the physics involved in stellar modelling codes5,6. Here we report a measurement of the radial chemical stratification (of oxygen, carbon and helium) in the hydrogen- deficient white-dwarf star KIC08626021 (J192904.6+444708), independently of stellar-evolution calculations. We use archival data7,8 coupled with asteroseismic sounding techniques9,10 to determine the internal constitution of this star. We find that the oxygen content and extent of its core exceed the predictions of existing models of stellar evolution. The central homogeneous core has a mass of 0.45 solar masses, and is composed of about 86 per cent oxygen by mass. These values are respectively 40 per cent and 15 per cent greater than those expected from typical white-dwarf models. These findings challenge present theories of stellar evolution and their constitutive physics, and open up an avenue for calibrating white-dwarf cosmochronology11. [less ▲]

Objectives: To describe the mean voice changes of 22 female teachers during a typical workday, examine the inter- and intra-subject variability, and establish a typology of different voice patterns during the workday. Methods: For each participant, fundamental frequency (F0), harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), jitter, and shimmer were measured on sustained vowels at the beginning and at the end of the workday, at three different times during the school year. Results: The group mean pattern showed significant increases in F0 and HNR during the workday and significant decreases in jitter and shimmer. However, considerable inter- and intra-subject variability was observed. Based on the variation in the acoustic parameters during the workday, three different voice patterns were identified. The first is characterized by a greater F0 increase during the day, interpreted as a common, appropriate adaptation to vocal load. The second is characterized by a greater increase in HNR during the day and greater decreases in jitter and shimmer, interpreted as hyperfunctional voice production. The third is characterized by greater decreases in F0 and HNR and greater increases in jitter and shimmer, suggesting acute inflammation or muscle fatigue following the workday. Conclusions: The observed variety of vocal patterns during the workday emphasizes the need to study this phenomenon individually and target different types of behaviors in order to develop tailored prevention and treatment methods. We present a new asteroseismic modeling of the hot B subdwarf (sdB) pulsator PG 1219+534, based on a 3-month campaign with the Mont4K/Kuiper combination at Mt Bigelow (Arizona) and on updated atmospheric parameters from high S/N low and medium resolution spectroscopy. On the basis of the nine independent pulsation periods extracted from the photometric light curve, we carried out an astroseismic analysis by applying the forward modeling approach using our latest (third and fourth generation) sdB models. Atmospheric parameters (Teff = 34 258±170 K, log g = 5.838±0.030) were used as independent constraints, as well as partial mode identification based on observed multiplet structures we ascribed to stellar rotation. The optimal model found is remarkably consistent between various analyses with third and fourth generation of sdB models, and also with previously published analysis with second generation sdB models. It corresponds to a sdB with a canonical mass (0.46 ± 0.02 M⊙), rather thin H-He envelope (log q(envl)= −3.75 ± 0.12), and close to He-burning exhaustion (Xcore(C + O) = 0.86 ± 0.05). We also investigate the internal rotation of the star. We find that PG 1219+534 rotates very slowly (Prot=34.91 ± 0.84 days) and that solid-body rotation is reached at least down to ∼60% of the radius. [less ▲]

Of all the royal families of ancient or modern fame, few are as iconic as the eighteenth dynasty of pharaohs of the New Kingdom of Egypt, whose opulence and deeds we are still familiar to nearly 3,500 years after their time. Tenth pharaoh of this dynasty and father of Tutankhamun, Akhenaten (Amenhotep/Amenhotep IV) still fascinates Egyptologists and history lovers through the many questions surrounding his atypical rule. One of the most striking aspects of the so-called Amarna period concerns the representations of the pharaoh himself, very confusing compared to the traditional iconography of the New Kingdom. These intriguing portraits of Pharaoh raised a whole lot of medical assumptions, more or less substantiated. We review here the main theories developed throughout history. [less ▲]

Common clay deposits from five localities in Foumban (West Cameroon) were investigated for their morphological, mineralogical and geochemical properties to determine their potential source rocks and suitability in ceramic product. The analytical results were obtained by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry. Morphologically, an homogeneous clayey layer was found in the upper part of a laterite cover on interfluves, and a clayey heterogeneous hydromorphic material in valleys. They are minerallogically composed of kaolinite (25-84%), illite (0-18%), smectite (0- 31%), and chlorite (0-8 %), associated with quartz (2-44 %), K-feldspars (0-27 %.), plagioclase (0-26%), goethite; (0-9%) with traces of rutile and hematite (≤5 %). The geochemical analysis shows a 115 relative large amount of SiO2 (45-71%), Al2O3 (14-31%), and low Fe2O3 (up to 11 %) suggesting weathering of mainly granitic and rhyolitic parent rocks. Most studied clays could be applied to building ceramic product such as bricks (refractory or not) and tiles. Illite may promote the glassy phase responsible for the densification of the final product. In addition, the relatively high proportion of alkali elements (K2O + Na2O, 6-8%) in some samples from Marom, Koutaba and is responsible for low firing temperature. However the presence of smectite (up to 5 %) limits the application of some Koutaba and Marom clays for ceramic building. The high Fe2O3 contents (> 8 %) in some Bangourain clays implied some pretreatment. [less ▲]
