This paper is concerned with modeling the behavior of random sums over time. Such models are particularly useful to describe the dynamics of operational losses, and to correctly estimate tail-related risk indicators. However, time-varying dependence structures make it a difficult task. To tackle these issues, we formulate a new Markov-switching generalized additive compound process combining Poisson and generalized Pareto distributions. This flexible model takes into account two important features: on the one hand, we allow all parameters of the compound loss distribution to depend on economic covariates in a flexible way. On the other hand, we allow this dependence to vary over time, via a hidden state process. A simulation study indicates that, even in the case of a short time series, this model is easily and well estimated with a standard maximum likelihood procedure. Relying on this approach, we analyze a novel dataset of 819 losses resulting from frauds at the Italian bank UniCredit. We show that our model improves the estimation of the total loss distribution over time, compared to standard alternatives. In particular, this model provides estimations of the 99.9% quantile that are never exceeded by the historical total losses, a feature particularly desirable for banking regulators. [less ▲]

In many applications, and in systems/synthetic biology in particular, it is desirable to compute control policies that force the trajectory of a bistable system from one equilibrium (the initial point) to another equilibrium (the target point), or in other words to solve the switching problem. It was recently shown that, for monotone bistable systems, this problem admits easyto-implement open-loop solutions in terms of temporal pulses (i.e., step functions of fixed length and fixed magnitude). In this paper, we develop this idea further and formulate a problem of convergence to an equilibrium from an arbitrary initial point. We show that this problem can be solved using a static optimization problem in the case of monotone systems. Changing the initial point to an arbitrary state allows to build closed-loop, event-based or open-loop policies for the switching/convergence problems. In our derivations we exploit the Koopman operator, which offers a linear infinite-dimensional representation of an autonomous nonlinear system. One of the main advantages of using the Koopman operator is the powerful computational tools developed for this framework. Besides the presence of numerical solutions, the switching/convergence problem can also serve as a building block for solving more complicated control problems and can potentially be applied to non-monotone systems. We illustrate this argument on the problem of synchronizing cardiac cells by defibrillation. Potentially, our approach can be extended to problems with different parametrizations of control signals since the only fundamental limitation is the finite time application of the control signal. Dans cette contribution, nous nous penchons sur la possibilité de créer une dynamique interactive entre intervention sur le terrain et recherche scientifique dans le domaine de la formation. Les terrains d’application se situent tous ici dans le domaine de la santé. Nous présentons quatre configurations d’une telle complémentarité. Chacune d’entre elles représente une articulation différente entre le but de développement des participants et celui de production de savoirs scientifiques. Dans le premier cas, une démarche de recherche est entreprise en amont de la conception d’une formation. La deuxième configuration illustre une recherche scientifique appliquée à un dispositif d’intervention existant et qui vient en retour en modifier la logique. Pour la troisième, il s’agit d’une articulation continue entre recherche et formation s’alimentant mutuellement dans une logique de recherche-action. Enfin, la quatrième partie se penche sur trois dispositifs pédagogiques dont la caractéristique est de combiner des intentions formatives avec des préoccupations de recherche [less ▲]

Validated extraction of gait sub-phase durations using an ambulatory accelerometer-based system is a current unmet need to quantify subtle changes during the walking of older adults. In this paper, we describe (1) a signal processing algorithm to automatically extract not only durations of stride, stance, swing, and double support phases, but also durations of sub-phases that refine the stance and swing phases from foot-worn accelerometer signals in comfortable walking of older adults, and (2) the validation of this extraction using reference data provided by a gold standard system. The results show that we achieve a high agreement between our method and the reference method in the extraction of (1) the temporal gait events involved in the estimation of the phase/sub-phase durations, namely heel strike (HS), toe strike (TS), toe-off (TO), maximum of heel clearance (MHC), and maximum of toe clearance (MTC), with an accuracy and precision that range from ‒3.6 ms to 4.0 ms, and 6.5 ms to 12.0 ms, respectively, and (2) the gait phase/sub-phase durations, namely stride, stance, swing, double support phases, and HS to TS, TO to MHC, MHC to MTC, and MTC to HS sub-phases, with an accuracy and precision that range from ‒4 ms to 5 ms, and 9 ms to 15 ms, respectively, in comfortable walking of a thirty-eight older adults ( (mean ± standard deviation) 71.0 ± 4.1 years old). This demonstrates that the developed accelerometer-based algorithm can extract validated temporal gait events and phase/sub-phase durations, in comfortable walking of older adults, with a promising degree of accuracy/precision compared to reference data, warranting further studies. The development of high-contrast capabilities has long been recognized as one of the top priorities for the VLTI. As of today, the VLTI routinely achieves contrasts of a few 10$^{-3}$ in the near-infrared with PIONIER (H band) and GRAVITY (K band). Nulling interferometers in the northern hemisphere and non-redundant aperture masking experiments have, however, demonstrated that contrasts of at least a few 10$^{-4}$ are within reach using specific beam combination and data acquisition techniques. In this paper, we explore the possibility to reach similar or higher contrasts on the VLTI. After reviewing the state-of-the-art in high-contrast infrared interferometry, we discuss key features that made the success of other high-contrast interferometric instruments (e.g., integrated optics, nulling, closure phase, and statistical data reduction) and address possible avenues to improve the contrast of the VLTI by at least one order of magnitude. In particular, we discuss the possibility to use integrated optics, proven in the near-infrared, in the thermal near-infrared (L and M bands, 3-5 $\mu$m), a sweet spot to image and characterize young extra-solar planetary systems. Finally, we address the science cases of a high-contrast VLTI imaging instrument and focus particularly on exoplanet science (young exoplanets, planet formation, and exozodiacal disks), stellar physics (fundamental parameters and multiplicity), and extragalactic astrophysics (active galactic nuclei and fundamental constants). Synergies and scientific preparation for other potential future instruments such as the Planet Formation Imager are also briefly discussed. [less ▲]

Wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) are common polyphagous soil pests of various crops, including maize and potatoes, inflicting severe economic damage (Parker and Howard 2001). Their management with pesticides is often not successful or sustainable and more research on biological alternatives is required. One of these alternatives could be the use of traps baited with attractive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in association with a microbial control agent. In this paper, we describe the methodology followed to identify volatile organic molecules with potential as wireworms attractants. We previously observed that cut potato tubers place on the soil surface were highly attractive for wireworms. To identify the attractive cues released by potato tubers, we defined three specific objectives: 1) developing a behavioral assay suitable for the study of wireworm orientation behavior; 2) profiling VOCs released by potato tubers; 3) evaluating the role of the identified VOCs on wireworms foraging behavior. Dans un contexte de déforestation massive dans les zones rurales adjacentes aux grandes métropoles de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), zones d’approvisionnement en bois-énergie, l’identification de la place et du rôle que prend l’arbre dans les villages constituent un préalable à tous plan de restauration forestière. Ce chapitre porte sur les connaissances taxonomiques, les usages et la distribution des espèces arborées indigènes au sein de quatre villages en zone rurale adjacente à la ville de Lubumbashi, chef-lieu de la province du Katanga en RDC. Un total de 49 espèces indigènes de la forêt claire a été identifié par les 51 familles interrogées. Les utilisations sont classées en 6 catégories. Neuf espèces sont connues par plus de 50% des familles et correspondent aux espèces les plus utilisées pour l’alimentation via la consommation de leurs fruits et pour la confection d’outils. Les espèces citées par les personnes interrogées ne sont pas présentes dans le système agricole. La densité d’arbre à l’hectare au sein des champs est faible. Les espèces présentes sont des espèces résistantes aux facteurs de dégradation. Cette étude a montré que la connaissance taxonomique est limitée aux espèces les plus utilisées. Il n’y a pas de gestion intégrée de l’arbre au sein du système agricole dans la zone rurale adjacente à la ville de Lubumbashi. [less ▲]

Microgravity, confinement, isolation, and immobilization are just some of the features astronauts have to cope with during space missions. Consequently, long-duration space travel can have detrimental effects on human physiology. Although research has focused on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system in particular, the exact impact of spaceflight on the human central nervous system remains to be determined. Previous studies have reported psychological problems, cephalic fluid shifts, neurovestibular problems, and cognitive alterations, but there is paucity in the knowledge of the underlying neural substrates. Previous space analogue studies and preliminary spaceflight studies have shown an involvement of the cerebellum, cortical sensorimotor, and somatosensory areas and the vestibular pathways. Extending this knowledge is crucial, especially in view of long-duration interplanetary missions (e.g., Mars missions) and space tourism. In addition, the acquired insight could be relevant for vestibular patients, patients with neurodegenerative disorders, as well as the elderly population, coping with multisensory deficit syndromes, immobilization, and inactivity. This paper deals with the derivation of a simplified model of a distribution network hosting dispersed photovoltaic units. The model is aimed at short-term dynamic simulations of a transmission grid in response to large disturbances. In a first step, a generic dynamic model of a photovoltaic unit is proposed, focusing on its interactions with the grid, in particular the controls triggered by voltage disturbances. The model takes into account various present and near-future grid codes. In a second step, a dynamic equivalent is derived accounting for the distribution network, the dispersed photovoltaic units, as well as static and dynamic (motor) loads. This equivalent is of the “grey-box” type and its parameters are tuned in the least-square sense to match the dynamic response of the original, unreduced system. Simulation results are reported on a detailed 913-bus distribution system subject to faults at transmission level. [less ▲]

Les troubles du sommeil sont fréquents chez l’enfant et leurs origines sont diverses. Ces troubles ont leur ancrage dans le développement neurophysiologique et psychoaffectif de l’enfant. Les enfants souffrant de troubles du spectre autistique présentent un déficit de sommeil, qui peut durer jusqu’à l’adolescence. Les troubles du spectre autistique comportent des comorbidités multiples, dont des altérations du sommeil. Ils sont importants à caractériser dans cette population, car ils peuvent avoir un impact négatif sur les comportements diurnes. Par ailleurs, ils entrainent souvent des difficultés au sein de la famille. La prise en charge doit avant tout prendre en compte le contexte environnemental afin d’améliorer les habitudes et l’hygiène du sommeil. Des questionnaires ainsi que des agendas de sommeil ont été remplis par des parents afin de démontrer l’importance d’une évaluation et d’une prise en compte des troubles du sommeil chez les enfants souffrant d’autisme en consultation pédopsychiatrique. La conservation de la biodiversité est devenue un challenge social, politique et économique au niveau mondial. Etant donné que certaines régions du monde sont fortement soumises à l’anthropisation et à ses impacts, il est indispensable de modifier notre perception et notre réflexion en ce qui concerne la conservation de la biodiversité et la restauration écologique. Ce chapitre explore les possibilités existantes et les adapte pour associer la conservation des espèces végétales d’intérêt avec la phytoremédiation des sols pollués. Cette nouvelle stratégie semble encourageante pour conserver le lien entre la société et l’environnement. En utilisant la diversité végétale locale, il est possible de créer de nouvelles communautés végétales afin de réhabiliter des sols pollués par les éléments traces métalliques. Le cas de la ville de Lubumbashi et de la flore de l’Arc Cuprifère Katangais en est un exemple marquant qui a été récemment testé avec succès. Cependant, d’autres études sur les métallophytes sont essentielles pour les utiliser de manière appropriée. [less ▲]
