In the 1940s and 1950s, the journal and publisher Sur inaugurated a practice of translation that was both democratic and elitist. Thus, it published in Spanish texts by William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet and Graham Greene, among others, in versions by translator-writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, José Bianco and Victoria Ocampo. This book attempts to demonstrate that, beyond the notions of equivalence, fidelity or divergence between version and original, translation policies intervene in the national literary field, rescuing or imposing authors, motives, styles, values.
