This deliverable presents the participatory design methodology of the PALETTE project and some first results of the implementation of this process. Some principles of the Actor Network Theory and of the Agile Methodology are embedded in the different stages of this methodology whose twelve stages (described in details in the last section) will be the basis of the participative development of services and scenarios of use. The first two stages of the process, establishing the collaboration with the CoPs and modelling their activities, have been implemented. Concrete results are available, i.e. procedures implemented to enrol the partners, methodological tools to gather and analyse the data from the CoPs. Some information has been communicated to partners of WPs 2, 3, 4 and 5 that needed it to progress in the development of their work. This process is not ended; it is iterative and will be refined all along the project. [less ▲]

The present deliverable aims at providing any CoP member, CoP animator or CoP mediator with the most complete view of the PALETTE tools and services. It gives a voice to the developer, the educationalist, the ergonomist and of course the user to explain how they consider them. So, it suggests use cases, scenarios but also shows to the reader where are the obstacles of use (with the aim of avoiding a too quick discouragement on his/her part) and it provides real users’ testimonies. It illustrates the participative design, core of the project, by showing how various kinds of partners in the project work at their evolvement. Several times, it evokes how they interact in that way. More, for the sake of completeness, external services which are "social network" oriented, are described in terms of functionalities and with the concern of providing the audience with a largest view of how ICT may help CoPs to grow up. [less ▲]

Experts in education and communication technology cannot speak about distance learning without calling up the new roles it springs up and the new relationships it generates. Its detractors claim that, under these new conditions, this kind of learning requires significant and expansive means unlike a more classical one. Instead of giving up in front of such disheartening elements, the authors have been trying to measure how far a simple distance learning system (i.e. with little human, hardware and software means) can be implemented. In that way, they have been creating a learning environment basically based on a mixture of individual and collaborative works. Owing to both this mixture and the organization structure, the students can reach the fixed learning goals. Through these processes, they try to isolate practices, learners or teaching staff should be inspired by. They should, in that way, evolve slightly from a classical context to the design of learning scripts including efficient tutoring in a distance context. The course described in this paper is called “Analysis of distance learning environments”. The public consists of adults having enrolled for a DES in Education and Training Technology. To conduct this experiment, the authors have been setting themselves some rules and constraints in order to derive a general process that might be applied to various situations. These rules and constraints are very close to the usual learner’s working constraints. Recommendations focus on practices including careful preparation, coordination techniques betweenteachers and learner’s initiation into reflexivity. [less ▲]

This paper considers the roles and competencies of the e-tutor. A literature review shows that different roles are assigned to the online tutors. Definitions of these roles are presented and discussed. Afterwards, we present eleven roles we consider important to manage the interactions between learners and tutors in an e-learning environment and the competencies needed to support these tutor’s roles. We conclude that to improve the quality of e-learning the tutor’s interventions have to be adapted to a specific context and we propose to train the e-tutors for these roles. [less ▲]

For five years, a postgraduate program in Educational and Training Technology has been developed by both Universities of Liège and Namur (Belgium). This program addresses already graduated adults having a training background. Depending on his/her training experience and a personnal project, the participant has the opportunity of developing different competencies profiles like: educational designer, designer and manager of training systems integrating ICT, e-tutor or trainer in e-learning environments, designer and producer of information or learning multimedia products. The plan of action articulates face-to-face and distance activities. It is based on several principles like definition and follow-up of a personal learning project, clarification of the actors’ roles, systematical use of technologies, active pedagogical methods and quality process. The authors present a series of scenarios including several types of distance activities. On the one hand, they illustrate these activities, insisting on their target goals, their meaning and usefulness, their development and their evaluation criteria. On the other hand, they discuss the organization of face-toface, blended or distance activities taking into account different sides of a learning system in order to stimulate the thought of designers and animators of such learning environments. This paper considers the rationale for the training and staff development of e-tutors. We then examine how this is implemented in practice through the presentation of case studies from three European universities. Finally we analyse the differences and similarities of these case studies to exemplify some principles for training models and guidelines for training of e-tutors. We conclude that although it is possible to identify these principles of good practice, there is great flexibility and diversity of methods and approaches in the training and staff development of e-tutors. This paper reports the characteristics of a post graduate diploma on educational technologies based on a combination of face-to-face and distance activities and assesses its quality. We first define the bases of the training program and present several tools (logbook, portfolio and questionnaires) which have been used to evaluate and regulate both training and individual learning process. Our observations indicate an increase and better regulation of the quality of the educational and learning processes. On the basis of the results we achieved, we propose that our original design could be extended to similar adult training programs. The way this innovative system is integrated in the universities shows an evolution due to its success that implies a certain kind of return on investment due to the demand of such kinds of device. This paper relates different strategies developed in order to support the learning process in a blended learning programme involving adults from different backgrounds who are interested in the use of Information and Communication Technologies for Education (ICTE). Referring to Carré & Pearn’s model of the seven pillars of self-learning, the author describes some principles, tools and resources that have been developed within the framework of a postgraduate diploma and that could be extended to similar adult training programmes.
